Thinking about buying a 4Runner

I'm in the market for a new SUV and the 4Runner is at the top of my list. I'm trying to decide between the V6 and the V8. I was wondering what kind of mileage you observe on each. I plan on using it to occasionally tow my snowmobiles and pop-up camper. Even though the V6 4Runner is rated to tow the weight, I'm skeptical if it will provide enough power. Does the V6 have the ability to pull 2 sleds or should I just go with the V8? Obviously the V8 has more torque and more hp, but I travel quite a bit and gas milage is a premium. Kind of a catch 22. I just got a '03 SE V8 about 4 months ago and love every second I am in it. I have been getting about 18mpg with an ooccasional 19-20mpg with mostly highway and some city driving.

I just had my first towing trip hauling a '02 Malibu Wakesetter VLX (about 4000lbs with the trailer) and only averaged 12mpg. Granted that was coming from NC through WV to get to Michigan.

There is an approx 1-2 mpg difference between the 6 and 8. The 6 would be plenty to tow any pop-up or any trailer under 4K lbs, but you do it on a regular basis or may upgrade to a larger trailer the V8 is sweet. I pull approx 3500 lbs with the V8 and it's like there is nothing back there.

The V6 / V8 issue has been discussed many times. Suggest you search, read the threads, then ask specific questions that aren't aleady answered. The threads will include lots of information on tow capacity and experiences.

Net is, either way you can't go wrong if you stay within the rated capacity of the engine you buy.

I pull a 4200 lb boat/trailer behind a V6 on mostly flat terrain (maybe a difference of 1000 ft in elevation total). You know it's there, but my V6 never struggles with it.

My recommendation would be to drive both and see what fits best for you. Remember that the V8 (if you get the 4x4) is full time 4x4.
