thinking about joining the T4R family again.

Its been awhile since i've been on here, but now im currently in the market for a 4th Gen 4Runner. I've previously owned a couple T4R's. I sold my 86' with over 200k on it and sold my 99' to a friend who is still driving it today with over 160k on it.

There's just something about these trucks that keep me coming back. Im hoping that the 4th gen is just as reliable as my previous 2.

I love my '07. From reading here they seem to age well. The only semi-regular issues seems to be frozen front calipers on the pre'06's, other than that they seem good. Some of the '03's and '04's are getting some miles now. If you choose a V8 know it has a timing belt that has a 90k interval. The V6 uses a chain.

Good luck on the hunt!

So far my 4th gen has been fantastic! I don't think you will have any problems. What did you replace your previous 4Runner with?

I stuck with the toyota family for a bit. The last cars after the 4runner were:

06 Lexus IS250
03 G35 Sedan
95 Lexus SC400

I might be moving to take a new job, so I need something with towing ability. I love the idea of the v8, but after having to replace a starter in my SC400 I'll never own a toyota v8 unless im making $$$.

See my sig.

My '08 is my third 4Runner. It's more refined than my 3rd gen and just as capable. I feel a lot more comfortable on those long trips in the 4th gen. Also, the 4th gen 4WD system has more function. Not that the 3rd gen had an issue, mind you...

IMHO: if you need something with towing ability I would definitely get a V8, that V8 is amazing..

I tow a glass bassboat with my 4th gen V6 (and have with my 3.0L V6 2nd gen and 3.4L V6 3rd gen, including 3000 lb campers) and it does just fine. I'm sure the V8 is better (natch) but the V6 definately holds its own.

Whats the deal with the starter? Go ahead, I'm sitting down!

I also tow a boat (around 2800 Lbs), 19 Ft camper and hunting trailers. I towed same staff with 1995 3.0 4x4 (5 speed) and 1996 3.4 4Runner (4x4 auto) , has done that for past 14 years.
No doubt, 4.0 V6 is very capable engine and it will tow, but it will never tow as the V8 will.
I also have a luxury of experiencing both engines every second day: my coworker and I do carpool, so we ride in each other trucks alternating each day. He has 2007 Tacoma 4x4, 4 door with V6 and have 2005 4Runner with V8: V8 is definitely smother, more refined, get

Both the 1UZ and 2UZ v8 motors have the starter buried under the intake manifold. Removing the starter requires removing the intake manifold, fuel injectors, and replacing all the gaskets. The job on my Sc400 called for 6 hours. Factor in the cost of a $250 starter + gaskets and nearly every electrical connector under the hood turned to plastic crumbles.

I didnt happen to do the starter, but I did do the coil packs, ignitors, wires, caps and rotors and I refuse to work on another toyota v8 again. Good thing the newer 2uz and 3uz use coil on plug design. Taking the caps and rotors off on a 1uz is pretty labor intensive for a simple tune-up.

Thanks for the input about the v6 vs v8 debate. I've done some reading and the Fuel economy isnt that much worse.

I know im gonna get flamed for this, but here's a pic of my 3g T4R. Yeah, yeah, no one really cares for lowered rigs here. I got plenty of flaiming on yotatech back in the day.

Dude your 4Runner is clean as hell, so is your Lexus & G35, damn you have some skill when it comes to customization, I really like all your rides. But yeah Yotatech is mainly all hardcore offroaders, but here at T4R.org there are actually quite a few Street Runner's on here, like me. :bigok:

Thanks! I remember seeing your old Black 3g on here awhile ago. I really like what you've done with your 4g.

Im kicking around the idea of running the 20" XSP wheels with a aggressive off road tire and a spacer kit. I think it'd look hot. Unless I get a smokin' deal, its gotta be 4wd this time.

More bad news for the V8 DIYer. Makes my boat look reasonable (two starters last year).

What do you average on the Hwy? I noticed you're in the Ft. worth area... Im thinking about relocating there to take a job in Irving. Know of any good areas to live? Also, do any of the T4R guys hang out on occasion?

Thanks!

I had truck for only 4 month and have not taken it on long trips yet.
My hunting lease is about 85 miles hwy and I was getting 19.5 mpg. My daily driving is 17.6 mpg.

Irving is not bad but it is a little bit too crowded and busy for my taste. I want to have a quite place for my family with best School district to raise my two kids, so about a year ago, I have moved out of Fort Worth (20 miles west).
Great part about North Texas that it has been less affected by the economy, than any other places in the country.
Welcome, if you decide to move!
