Thinking about selling 4th Gen for a 5th gen

As the post states, I'm thinking of upgrading to the 5th gen. Not because I have to, or my truck is bad, I'm just getting bored. I was thinking of doing a nice real long travel kit front and rear. But then I would have to keep my rig longer. Don't get me wrong, I love my rig and I take excellent care of her. I'm just thinking of going with something a tad newer and then doing the long travel kit then.

I have a 4th and 5th gen, and they are both great vehicles. My 5th gen is solid, just a bit underpowered. I like driving my 03 V8 a lot more.

If nothing else, a new model should drop 5th gen resale value a bit.

However, you're losing the kick ass center diff and associated limited slip moving to a 5th gen (unless you go Limited). I'll second that the 5th is underpowered. Having driven both, I'll never own a 5th.

I agree, but I'd wait at least until we were close to the release of the new models. Very best time to buy the last generation.

I bought a 13 Tundra right before the 14 refresh. Got a screaming deal. ($34k for a $43k msrp truck).

Agreed with others, but first thing I would recommend would be to at least take one for a test drive. Don't know your financials, but while the car may be getting boring and mundane, not having a payment or possibly a shorter term or smaller amount as compared to getting a newer 4runner is always a great reason as well to just keep what you have if it isn't broken.
Just my .02. I have looked and test driven and in the end, I realized I will just stick with my 4th until it blows up.

I test drove a Trail Premium over the weekend, it was very nice but i was happy to get back in my 07 V8 and step on the gas and it actually goes. I'm going to drive my 4th gen as long possible.

Test drive a 5th gen and compare what the trade offs would be and is it worth it to you. When I got rid of my last 3rd gen for 4th gen SE I almost went back until I lifted it and gone was the soccer mom feel. I felt the exact same way when buying my 5th gen LE until lifting it. I don't bury my foot so the power isn't a concern to me. I do like the modern creature features, but I had to upgrade my last one to get these. I prefer more of a stock look though.

My 5th gen limited handles well, and is really comfortable. I like it. It also gets 16 to 17 mpg while my 4th gen v8 gets 18mpg. Both runners have slightly oversized tires.

Oh yeah, and my 5th gen had a future recall on the passenger airbag. Evidently in a crash it can shoot out shrapnel and kill the passenger (usually me). Not enough replacement so the recall is being done in stages. A safety feature of my 4runner could kill me. NBD.

Thanks for the input. If i do anything, it will most likely be next spring or summer. I have no complaints with my rig at all. Heck, this little v6 is a hot rod and underrated by far. I was just tossing around some ideas before i dump 20 grand into the suspension setup and accessories. Thank again. I will probably take a 5th gen for a spin and see how i like it.

The V6 in the 4Runner is only about a half second slower in the 1/4 mile than the last gen V8 so it's not like you are losing a lot of acceleration. I just prefer the looks of the 5th gen and the trail is a return to looking like a rugged truck again right off the showroom floor and has a lot of off road goodies.
