Thinking about selling or trading my TE to get a truck….

….but I LOVE the Trail Edition!

Our expanding family consists of my wife, a 20 month old daughter and a 4 month old son as well as our dog Rocky. We would like to find a full size crew cab truck but I just cannot make up my mind as to what to do. The more I drive the 4Runner the more I love it but the space would be fantastic for us and the pickup bed would be a godsend for me. I just sold my 03 Dodge diesel a few months back and this is the first time in my life I have been without a truck.

What trucks out there would you guys go to in my shoes or would you just stay with the 4Runner

The open bed of a pickup is useless to me, I need covered storage space. If I were you I would look into a Sequoia. Only you can decide what is right for you. I really think you are ready for a minivan.

And the open bed of a truck is essential to me. Carrying deer and elk around in the back of an SUV is tough. I also like to take my ATV to the mountains

I built a 6x8 open trailer, haven't missed carrying an empty pickup bed around for over a decade. Is that an option for you?

Keep the 4R and get a used Tundra even the old body style full size 4 door '06 last year I believe with 4.7 V8. Use that for hunting and towing. Many around here in NoCo.... I just sold my Sequoia for a LC. Don't think it will meet your needs hunting.

I will never publicly admit this but when I lived in Minnesota and Michigan, my Dodge Caravan was my best driving winter vehicle. Now, I need to go into hiding since I have shamed myself.

As for selling the TE and buying the truck let me suggest a 4x6 or 5x8 trailer to tow behind the TE. The trailer was my best decision when I sold my truck and thought I wanted it back. I lifted my trailer 4"s for more ground clearance. Now, it goes to the ranch, camping and Home Depot.

I have owned 6 pickups in the past. And deciding to get trailer has been my best decision.

If you buy a truck where will you put the stroller when it is snowing? You are going to need a shell too. Keep an enclosed SUV type vehicle with the kids that young. (Damn, I feel like a older dad now.)

Back in the 80's when my son was born we needed a bigger vehicle. I ended up buying a minivan because I got a great deal on a leftover model. My wife fought it for a while and I resisted driving it. Turns out it was the handiest vehicle we had ever owned and the other vehicles just set around hardly used. My son would always complain when he was old enough to talk that he was not going if we did not take the minivan. He had his own captions chair, a/c control, radio control etc. and could see out good. In the back of the Mustang GT I had at the time he could hardly see out at all in a kids seat. You know how loud a screaming unhappy kid can be so the minivan always got the use. I could not believe how much stuff can fit in a minivan. Now that I am retired and have no kids around the 4runner is a good size for me. I have an atv trailer to haul my atv around and make Home Depot, landfill runs. I actually like a trailer better than a pickup because with a pickup you are always worried about scratching and denting it. With a trailer you just throw the crap in, tie it down and go.

Before I bought my 05 4Runner, I was also looking at double cab Tacoma's. In the end the enclosed cargo space won out, and I will be purchasing a 5x8 trailer to tow behind for when I need the extra room. I actually got rid of my pickup truck to get the 4Runner, but it was an extended cab and I need to put a car seat in the back for the little guy.

Unless you are using it for work, I find pickup truck beds to be useless 95% of the time.

You didn't say why you need a truck/crew cab or what you would use it for. You don't need one because you have 2 kids and a dog. Sounds like you just want one.

I am new to the forum and just bought a 14 TE. I have a '10 Dodge CC cummins lifted but it is too big for a lot of things, so that's why I got the runner.. I am liking the 4runner better for the family excursions. I would suggest a trailer or a used truck. Although, the new tundra looks pretty good so that could be an options if you tow big things or need payload for a camper or something.

Actually, I need one. I guide and outfit hunts for a living and throwing bloody dead stuff in a SUV sucks. I need a pickup bed for hauling equipment and my ATV. I would also like the space. At 6'4" and 265lbs it gets cramped in the 4Runner.

That being said, I just sold my diesel and won't go back to a 3/4 ton or 1 ton. If I trade I will go with a full size half ton. The TE 4Runner will damn sure go anywhere I need it to go though and that is a HUGE plus

Its what I have been leaning towards. The 8 speed transmission is so nice and they get great mileage while having more HP and more torque than the Tundra. Its just a damn tough decision to go away from proven Toyota reliability and value to a relative unknown in the new Ram.
