Thinking of buying the URD supercharger

Yes...sort of thinking about it.

Just rolling the idea in my head.

I want more power...boost...more ummff.. a supercharger is the cure.

Since TRD has since ditched us and URD is the company that says YES the FJ curiser based URD S/C will fit the 4runner V6 with slight adjustments...I've been rolling the idea around in me head.

I need some advise and opinions.

First I'm in Orange County, CA....the URD USA webpage says that the SC is only valid for off road vehicles when being used in California...well...I drive on a street...but I did find that the only reason they say this is because the URD SC is not certified for California. The emissions will probably pass any test or emissions laws in California, its just not certified is all.

Whats the worst that could happen if I got that SC since i'm in CA? I get pulled over for speeding? The cop would have to know what to look for and would have to know who URD is and that its not legal in CA? I mean...seriously...what would the cop do?

I don't have to do any smog test for another 5 years or so...but again...the SC should be able to pass just fine.

What about warranty from Toyota? I have the 100,000 mile warranty, I assume that doing this would void that warranty?

What if I got it professionally installed and tuned?

Anyone know of a good shop in the Orange County, CA area to do this kind of stuff for me? Tunning...and installations...and any kind of "slight" adjustments that would be needed to fin the URD on to the 4runner SC?

any help would be appreciated. I wish Gadget was around to answer as I know he has ties with URD USA. I emailed them but they are hard to get ahold of like everyone has mentioned. :(

As I understand it in Cali, when you get your emissions the testers visually verify that the equipment is CARB certified. If it is not, that's an automatic fail. Someone from Cali should be able to give you specifics. My knowledge is just from talking to people from Cali or have spent time there.

I was just reading about that today in "4WD Toyota Owner" magazine.

Price ; $4500.00 + install.

HP output 304hp at FW 334 TQ.

It says only fits 05-08 Tacoma and 07+ FJ's w/4.0.

Warranty : installed by a dealer 5 years / 60,000 miles or balance of factory warranty , whichever is greater. If self installed its 12 months or 12,000 miles , parts only .

Its on page 7 of the Jan/Feb 08 issue.

www.4wdtoyotaowner.com

I really look forward to this magazine when it comes. Some good pic's info , ect....

This info is only what I just read today in the Mag. I don't know if there is a different S/C one for the 4.0 4R.

If you plan on keeping the vehicle for 100K+ miles, don't do it. These superchargers only have a life expectancy of approx 100K miles. You will have to lay out much money at that time to either rebuild it (if it can be rebuilt) or to put back to stock. Been there done that!

TRD does have a SC for the 1GR-FE 4.0L. Do a google search for part number: PTR29-35070 (core sc unit). As Falls mentioned previously, it was designed for the Taco & FJ. Here's some add'l info I found online:

You will need 2 part numbers to order this complete for your Tacoma or FJ Cruiser.
PTR29-35070 is the main supercharger, this item.

You will also need the fit kits to install the supercharger on your vehicle:...PTR29-35072 for Tacoma, or PTR29-35071 for FJ Cruiser for the price of $338.00

Key Specifications Roots-type rotating components in a one piece integral manifold Water-to-Air intercooler system with a custom low temperature radiator (LTR) reduces inlet temperatures for maximum power output. High flow fuel injectors Iridium spark plugs Boost Pressure 5-6 psi Key Features 50 State Emission Legal Reprogramming of ECU using Toyota Tech Stream System Installation time approximately 6 hours SAE Net Power: HP 304@5400rpm / Torque 334ft-lbs@3600rpm.
This and the fit kit come in separate boxes.
Sorry, they do not have the fit kits for the 4runner or Tundra YET.

(Dealership installation is strongly recommended).

Installation time is approximately 6 hours .
Installation instructions are included, along with new injectors and Denso Iridium spark plugs.

Engine calibration reflash is available through your local Toyota dealer.

I found a link to a video of a SC'd Taco owner doing 0-60 in about 5.5 sec. This guy also has another Taco with an URD SC and he prefers the TRD SC. I'm waiting til they make a fit kit for the 4R and also to confirm whether it would work with the 4sp tranny. ECU reflash is important also. I can't wait to get one! :D

Arrgggh ... must be getting closer to Spring ... days are getting longer, I'm starting to perk up [coming out of hibernation after what seems like a dark and dreary Winter], and all this talk of a SC made my ears start to quiver. Had one, trouble-free, in my wife's very fast white 1993 AllTrac -- loved it. Have a HP turbo, very fast, also trouble-free, in the passion red 1998 S70 Volvo T5 -- obviously not a SC but love it all the same. The hot Swede shares the garage with the perfect sleeper grey T4R Sport. Perfect low-end grunt, long-term butt dyno power, and all those things we know and love in the T4R Sport. So, what can be added for more of the same? Talk of Taco time and FJ Cruisin' with a SC is all well and good, but ... what about the V8? Somewhere in this list, shortly before Xmas -- sorry, I've forgotten where right now -- I read some posts about a SC for the V8. Custom-built, I think. Done right, that would be spectacular. Anyone know of news, or maybe even availability, on this front? If such a thing was possible, the Spring would be even better and brighter than it promises to be. HNY and cheers to the list, :biggrin2: Blueleezard

Well He's not sharing any information except that he's put some good miles on it and is in the process of adding other parts too it... haha sorry not to informative but I know jack-$hit about SC's. Here's the thread...

I've been following it closely but "Blink" isn't giving more info. Maybe his handle should be "One-eyed Blink" ;):

I thought the ALLtracs were turbocharged 3SGTE? Didn't know they had kits to supercharge them. BTW, I'm super jealous you had access to an alltrac. I always wanted one since I had owned a 93 GT hatchback.

That's what I thought. I think the engine from the first gen MR2 was supercharged... no idea on the engine code though. But a 1993 Celica All-trac turbo is THE car. They were going for well over $30k 15 yrs ago. My ex had a '93 GT-S.

Our lightly-used and absolutely beautiful white 5-speed 1993 AllTrac of days gone by was definitely supercharged, it went like "stink", and because both the SC and the drive train were so well engineered [except for torque twists at the low end that caused a bit of torque "hop" when turning lock to lock in a parking lot, for example], it was an absolute pleasure [and a total thrill] to drive -- and then, to push to the limit. The previous [first] owner, who was a bit of a weirdo amateur "tech fanatic" [he had what I believe was an oval or elliptical piston, high-performance Kawasaki road bike that he liked to max out regularly, and he laid an awful lot of rubber -- I think he was aiming for under one second to 100KPH and a top speed of about 370KPH!!!!], had the AllTrac floored [when he owned it] for about 300 contiguous KM, all-out, super high-speed [well over 220 KPH] on the Alaska Highway from Ft Nelson BC to Ft St John BC. For all you high-speed, instant acceleration fanatics who are looking for a road that will handle what you aim to do, that's a well-paved and well-maintained route on the Alaska Highway with absolute straight stretches of over 20 miles [30KM, that you can actually see, straight ahead], no radar, no police to speak of [unless you are awfully unlucky], and, in the Summer with long [I mean really long] days, it is to die for [please pardon the phrase]. Caution and sensibility are obviously in order -- be very vigilant for moose, bear and caribou trotting across the road, and for your Summer months, watch out for extended wheelbase gold-plated behemoth campers from Florida towing AMG SUVs -- I would never, repeat never recommend going above the speed limit :-) -- anyway, the AllTrac as it was max'ed out was spectacular and a total mind-blowing experience, and the SC performed flawlessly, especially with good rubber -- even if this unit had a weird blue leather interior [not relevant to performance, obviously]. Now, let's get back to the T4R -- what I'm interested in is a SC that will be a "bolt-on, no custom cutting, no problem" addition to my 2003 T4R Sport V8. I want more grunt, and especially, more outstanding butt dyno results from a dead stop, all the way to top end if it can be done -- without a fatal blow to fuel economy [but I know that will happen anyway]. Anyone have anything helpful???

Cheers to the list,

Blueleezard :D
