Thinking of doing tune-up?

My 01 SR5 has 82,000 miles on it and I've been thinking of replacing the spark plugs and wires since they are original factory. I already replaced both diff. fluids, transmission fluid, transfer case fluid, and pcv valve. Any suggestions on what else to do with the plugs and wires ?

AT 82k I'd probably do a fuel filter as well. When did you last change the air filter and flush the radiator, if more than 30k I would do both of those items as well. How does your brake and power steering fluid look, perhaps change those as well.

How much of a difference will new plugs, wires, and fuel filter make?

How can I tell if I have the original wires and plugs? Where is the fuel filter loacted?

You'll notice more pep and take off reaction with changing all these, and better fuel efficiency. You can't tell if you have the original plugs but most OEM plug wire manufacturers put the manufactured date on the wires. Anything over 5 years should be replaced IMHO.

The fuel filter is under the body on driverside. Its a messy smelly replace job, I did it once and had to retighten the connection nuts twice cause it was leaking, I even used plumbers tape. Put a drip pan under when checking for leaks.

half and half plugs

probably the best way to tell your spark plugs are originals is there will be Nippondensos on one side and NGKs on the other.

Unless the Previous owner was that anal....

instead of makign a new thread...
is there write-ups on all these fluid/filter changes and cleaning? I want to do some work when it gets warmer. the 4runner had a rough winter.

Always best to tell which tranny you have when you ask about fluids. If you have a 5 speed I would strongly recomend Red Line MT-90, if its hard to get then Mobil 1 75/90 is fine. The Mobil 1 75/90 is perfect for the transfer as well. Personally I am just sticking with the Toyota Dexron3 in my auto tranny and doing a drain and fill every 10-15k. Last time I drained my pan the fluid that came out looked exactly like the fluid I put back in, brand new, so I'd say it works fine.

Thanks Pat161. Yeah, I should have added that. I do have a 5 speed. Thanks for the advice. It's been below zero here the past few days but once it gets a bit warmer I'll be doing the drain and fill. It hasn't been done for a while and I'm a little concerned. Are the Mobil and Red line synthetic?

Just did the plugs, pcv, and throttle body last night. Throttle body was really dirty. But I really like working on my own truck.

Yes the Redline and Mobil1 are both fully synthetic. I liked the Redline when I had my 00 5 speed as it is designed specifically for manual trannies and works with the syncros better than Mobil1. It is not as slippery which helps the syncros engage better. I would stay away from the MTL as it is a little thinner and our trannies work better with the MT-90. When I had the 00 I tried both Redlines and the M1 and the MT-90 was the best, not a huge difference but a little less notchy, especially on the 1-2 shift in cold weather.

Hey Pat161. Redline is not sold in my area. I'm thinking about ordering some online but with shipping it's almost the same as Royal Purple. Do you know anything about that brand? I've read that their motor oil is quite good. Better than Mobil 1.

The cheap gear oil (walmart) is about $5 bucks a quart and redline is going for $12. Royal Purple is $15! I guess I'm wondering if the name matters or if it's all the same stuff in a different bottle.

I also had to order my Redline on the net, the clossest retailer was 100 miles away. If memory serves, and this is going back a ways, I paid $37 for a gallon shipped.
I have no personal experience with Royal Purple, but from everything I've read and personal accounts it seems to be just as good as Redline or M1, and as you pointed out some feel its better. I would not hesitate to try it, just never seen any and never gone out of my way to order it. I have an auto now so I put M1 in the engine, diffs and xfer and run stock Toyota tranny fluid.

One more question. My Haynes manual is calling for Hypoid oil in the front and rear diffs. Can I simply use MT-90 or do I need to get hypoid oil?

Don't use MT-90 in your diffs, for your tranny and even your transfer case it is fine. The MT designation is pretty much designed to run in manual trannys and works with the syncros. Either get Redline 75/90 gear oil or just use Mobil1 75/90 front and back. I had some leftover MT-90 after I wrecked my 00 and got an 02 auto, so I ran it in my transfer case for a year, it was fine but I have since switched it back to M1.
