Thinking of getting a Tundra

I've seen a few Tundras around here for a good price, thinking of getting one maybe at the end of the year or sometime next year.

Still not sure if I want a Tundra or Tacoma, but anyone have any experience with the newer Tundras? Just trying to get some personal opinions on them!

Tundra


The Tundra is a nice truck, of course, but they eat a lot of gas (especially with the 5.7L iForce V8). Consider a Ford F-150 or Chevy Silverado, too.

If you are using it for "work" or towing & hauling, I would give the nod to the Ford. If it is a personal truck that you'll use for commuting, maybe the Toyota would be nice. For something easier to work on, go with the Silverado.

For a mid-size truck, you can't beat the Tacoma. Think of it is a 4Runner with a cargo bed, and the "Double Cab" is the best way to accommodate extra passengers because it has four real doors.

Whatever you get, take care of it and it will take care of you!

I love the Tacomas but if I'm going to spend that kind of money, I might as well get a full size truck.

I will most likely end up with a Ford 6.0 diesel but I was just interested in the Tundra a little bit also. After doing the research though, I doubt I will get one just because its not the best buy out of all the trucks out there, for several reasons.

Ford Diesels


The 6.0L Ford 'Powerstroke' turbodiesel is only available in the heavy-duty line of their trucks (F-250 and up) - and it is truly a beast.

If you want to learn all there is to learn about that type of truck, go to the Ford Powerstroke Forum ( Ford Powerstroke Forum ). They have a sub-forum for just about every year, make and model of those trucks.

IMHO, being familiar with diesel engines, I would suggest the best years for the 6.0L were the '06 and '07 models. Ford had made some improvements to both the engine blocks and the transmissions. Remember that the 6.0L (and the 7.3L and 6.4L, for that matter) were sourced from Navistar/International and are not Ford engines.

The 7.3L Powerstroke (made from 1994 through the early part of 2003) develops less power than the 6.0L, but they have a MUCH BETTER reputation and will run practically forever if you take good care of them. I know of several DT444e (Navistar term) engines used in FedEx delivery trucks that have well over 400,000 miles and are still going strong! The weak link in the 7.3L trucks that Ford made is that the transmission is not as sturdy as the later ones.

P.S. Too bad the rumored 3/4 ton Tundra with the Caterpillar diesel never came to fruition.

I can tell from experience that my Tundra got just as good of mileage as my 4runner , 14.7 city and close to 20 mpg highway .
They are good trucks and the 5.7 is the a great engine for torque and HP , mine was a 4x4 with the towing package and XSP package that made for a rough ride on pot holed streets . But you can't go wrong with making that purchase .

Yea I know a lot about the Powerstrokes, my fiance has an '03 6.0 and I LOVE it. He's got a Edge Juice chip so he usually gets around 24+ MPG with that.

And ramoine-that is an awesome Tundra! I love the insides of them..they look so cool.

I basically just want a truck for two reasons: I've always wanted one and if something were to happen to my fiances, we would still have a truck to haul the dirt bikes and everything. And I want the turbo to whistle like crazy...lol

wow that is a beauty ramoine-I am opposite of laureen though I can't warm up to that interior but the exterior is gorgeous.

Laureena I notice same thing out here with pricing-you can pick up a Tundra for very little more than a Tacoma. However the Tacomas hold their value much better it seems.

Get the POWERSTROKE! mine has been great so far. anyway the tundra is a good truck but I wouldn't considerate if it didn't have the 5.7 V-8. that being said my friends dad drives a crew cab 1st gen tundra and has been great to him. but mainly I agree 100% with Jeff whatever you get if you treat it right it will treat you right. good luck with your next purchase.
