thinking of getting an 84

Ok, so I'm thinking of getting an 84 4runner the asking is $1400, but he said he might go as low as $1100. let me know what you think.
I don't know what is standard with an 84, but its a 4x4 with a 5 speed 22R engine. so good? bad? what should i check if i take it for a test drive?

5 spd/22R was the only thing available in 84.

Frame rust was a serious problems in those years, along with the fender rust yours has.

Get a small hammer and start tapping on the bottom and inward & outward face of the frame rails. Esp anywhere it turns upward, above the rear wheels, and where the tank sits against the frame.

The frames rust from the inside out, so by the time you can see it, it's bad.

Also find out when the timing chain was last changed (a bargaining tool if never or >90K mi ago).

Check the coolant and oil to make sure neither looks milky.

Get him down lower, even 1100 seems a little high.

yeah, 1100 is a bit high, the rust should be of concern just like Fourwd1 said.
How many kms are on that?

There is just under 240K on it.


So I just got back from looking at it, the rust is a real problem. I think the frame is ok, sofar, but the rear fenders are realy bad. the bottom is rusted out of 'em. another thing that is putting me off is the guy said "since i got it 4 years ago, i haven't done any work to it, exept wash it."

I dont have any real macanical experiance, and so i dont know if i can handle all the trouble that its going to cause. In its current conditon, what would an accurate price be?
