Thinking of purchasing a 2014 Trail Edition for strictly on road use

You need to drive both back-to-back. THe XREAS suspension on the limited is very nice, but the KDSS sway bar system on the Trail handles performance driving better (on and off road). The Trail mitigates body roll in turns superbly.. I don't understand why Toyota doesn't offer it on the Limited. As you can tell I'm gonna deviate from the rest here and say if it were me, and I didn't care about full time 4wd, it would be Trail edition with KDSS all the way, especially for road driving. So you have some extra 4wd traction control features you may not use.. who cares. Go drive them and see for yourself.

Driving with the xreas and 20" wheels through the mountain winding roads it felt nice driving on them. Now that I'm lifted with bigger tires I can't take turns as hard anymore without having the stability control(VSC)kicking in. I don't mind slowing down around corners now after feeling the VSC kicking in. That just scares the crap out of you.

Their needs to be a VSC overide because my kicks in now and I know I can handle the curve at the speed I'm traveling and the VSC screws up your ability to turn and hold the line.

If you hold the VSC button down for I think 3sec. it will disable it. only thing about this is, if you go over I think 40-50 MPH it will automatically go back on. I maybe wrong. I tried it about a 1 year later after I had the 4r. I don't remember the results.

The OP's question is easy if it's taking in context. This is obviously not about 4X4 type, or bells & whistles. It about what someone wants...in so far as looks and feel.

I agree with Sparky the TE with KDSS rides and handles better than the Limited model (and I've had XREAS too, to tell the difference). Moreover it has a very different look, so we're talking a real choice there too. Add in the Trail costs less, and doesn't look like a typical SUV mall vehicle.

I went with the Limited because I want memory seats, auto head lights, full time 4x4, auto temp control. I had never had the keyless start on a vehicle before but now that I have it on my Limited it would be hard going back to a vehicle that I had to get the key out to unlock the door and start the engine. I can take care of the 20" wheels easy enough.

I had this same problem. I ended up going with the Trail purely for looks in the end. I loved what the Limited came with but could not stand the look of the front bumper...looks like it had braces...so I got myself a 2014 Trail in black and loving every minute of it! I get LOTS of looks at my Trail as they are hard to come by and not seen very often...

Have you both done Zero Point Calibration? If not, you should, it'll probably fix the issue.

I would go with limited. Had my sr5 for almost 4 years, and I'm still kicking myself in the butt for not forking over the extra $ for limited. I just hate the look of 20inch wheels on a SUV, but that's just me.

I think that full time all wheel drive is far superior to part time 4x4 IMO, and in this case the mpg are so close to each other.

I live in Brandon MB and I decided on a 2015 limited, Im just currently waiting for it. Here's my reasoning.

- I currently own a tacoma which offers pretty much no luxury, so I'm going to take all I can get this time around.

-I pull a snowmobile trailer down the highway in winter, and as we both know, manitoba highways are part ice part pavement. The trail is not supposed to be driven in 4x4 on pavement. Be damned if I'm going to switch from 2 - 4x4 every time I see ice coming.

- I normally hate chrome, and I've removed every drop of it on my tacoma, but the 4runner's chrome has grown on me, and I feel the limited looks a lot more luxurious in person than the trail or sr5, the larger wheels and lower bumpers look better IMO when I'm looking for a road vehicle.

- If I'm spending $50k on a vehicle I want it to look like it and to come with the features of a $50k vehicle.

- I want a 4runner over other suv's because of its rigid structure and the fact that I prefer the feeling of driving a truck over a car. The jeeps are also too expensive for how many problems they have.

As for features,

- Dual climate control
- ventilated seats
- Redwood leather interior
- mirrors with turn signals
- push button start/smart key
- 15 speaker jbl
- automatic headlights
- clearance sonar sensors

I modified my truck with off road ability in mind and prioritized that over on road comfort. I regret that decision, because I never take it off road.

look at the difference between the SR5 Premium and the LE.

I just posted this in another thread : http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/175813-premium-upgrade-pkg-vs-limited.html#post1774778

SR5 Prem Pkg :

01. 3rd row comes with it (you don't notice the hump like the LE)
02. 17" inch wheels (huge selection of tires w/o going +sizing)
03. better baseline for suspension mods
04. entune/jbl not standard (entune isn't that great)
05. soft tex seats (some say these wear better than the LE leather)
06. no push/start smart key system (better for 3rd party remote starters)
07. heated seats only (not vented like the LE)
08. better plug/play slider selection
09. less chrome
10. no parking sonar

LE Pkg :

01. 3rd row is an option (hence the hump in the rear storage area w/o 3rd row)
02. 20" inch wheel (3 oem tires currently have to go +sizing to get any selection)
03. xreas (hinders some suspension mods)
04. etune/jbl standard
05. leather seats
06. push/start smart key system
07. heated/vented seats (vented only seems to work well at high setting for me)
08. full time 4wd (this was a main selling point for me)
09. sliders are iffy (you have to take into account the xreas lines and the loss of the lower rocker panel, leaves a gap if the slider doesn't compensate for it)
10. godly amount of chrome (silver color tones this down a little)
11. parking sonar (this is great if you have a small garage length wise one, like me, lets me park right next to the wall with about 2-4 inches from the wall)

those are just the things I thought of right off the bat.

Get a TE premium. I have a 2014 TE premium and love it. Leather, heated seats, sunroof, maybe other stuff from the limited. Still has the looks, and the TE capabilities should you need it.

Just keep in mind that Canada doesn't get all the trim levels. Toyota Canada offer the SR5, SR5 Upgrade Package,TE, Limited 5 seats and Limited 7 seats. I'm not sure if equipments differ from the one in the states.
