Thinking of selling and replacing with......

Another 3rd gen 4runner!


I love mine to death, but I just regret not waiting for a 4x4. I kinda rushed into getting one and just said screw it. Now, after having the 4runner for a couple years, I realized I'm gonna keep one for the rest of my life, or til it breaks down...so basically the rest of my life :)

I want to not have to worry about getting stuck anywhere, and dont want to always have the thought in the back of my head about having to put chains on in case I go to tahoe or something. Also wanna go wheeling and while I know the 2wds are plenty capable, like Lignum, Bakarme, and COB, but I'm thinking I'll get a 4x4 and not have to think twice about anything.

What do you guys think?

If I do decide to get a new one and sell mine, I'll swap over my mods and parts to the new one . Not quite 100% sure if im gonna do this, but the little voice in my head keeps saying to do it. Opinions?

you seem to know what you like and yes it will be a lot nicer if you go 4WD. My friend on here did this exact same thing after he had to park his and ride with me at the OHV park.
 
I just sold my lightly modded 2000 base T4R and bought a 99 LTD that was halfway built.. and in need of some bandaids!

I couldn't of been happier. I ended up paying $106 more for the 99' after registering it, threw $350ish into 2 new cv's, 2 new LBJ's, and a sway bar/steering rack bushing kit. (Still waiting on some of that to arrive)

I ended up making the choice after searching for 6-7 months for a 4x4 4runner... I just happened to find one I liked, the 99', so I contacted the guy. He didn't have the title in hand and he still had a lien on the car. This was about a month before I sold my 00' T4R. The DAY I sold my base model, this guy calls me and tells me that he just landed the title to his 4Runner and was ready to sell. Now I have a fully capable Locked, Lifted, 99' T4R on 33" rubber sitting in my yard. It still needs quite a few 'little' things done to it.. windshield, rear cat, carpet... But I now have the piece of mind to say that I will have NO problems going anywhere I want to go...

My point is, If you've got the slightest inkling that the 2wd isn't quite enough for you.. Don't keep it. BUT, don't rush into anything unless money is obviously not a factor. Check craigs, ebay, (SEARCHTEMPEST.COM), every day until you find the one you want for the price you can afford... It'll pay off in the end.

IMO: When you decide that you've got the cash to make the purchase, immediately return your 2wd back to stock. Store your wanted mods on your wife's/girlfriends side of the bed, buy the 4x4, and then go to wrench crazy. :)
 
Do it! If you're willing to consider this, then you already know you want to spend some time in a 3rd gen 4runner, it might as well be the right one for you.
 
I did the exact thing your thinking about. I bought a 2nd gen and almost immediatly regretted it being that it was 4x2. I got stuck in things I really shouldn't of and I was shall I say "jealous" of all the people I knew that had 4 wheel drive. I sold the second gen and bought my 99, I really couldn't be happier, the 4 wheel drive is worth it.

If you do it patiently and precise you could potentially end up just having an even trade on your hand money wise. I would highly recommend 4wd though! Then you never have to wonder what if.
 
Haha man I'm with you on that one, I'm on autotrader/cars/craigslist all the time looking at runners. I would love to find another T4R with less miles and 4wd because like many previous posters have said, I've fallen in love with this truck!

haha I inherited the 4runner so there wasn't really a choice. But i know for sure my next rig if i am set financial wise would be a 3rd gen 4wd runner. In college now... I dont know how you stand financially but selling yours and then buying another one would net you out of your pocket maybe 3-4k at the max. In my area a decent runner 4wd is around 8-10k . Whereas a 2wd runner i see around the same. maybe 1k or 2k less.

I hold off on most of the bigger mods (armor, 33's, sliders) is because I know there will be a day when i can go all out when i get the rig i want.

but for now i'm set

you can lift it now if you want. swapping lift parts shouldn't be too hard as long as you keep the stock parts somewhere.

I just replaced my 2 wheel drive automatic for a 4x4 manual. I drove that 2x4 all over the woods hunting and never got it stuck. I put 140,000 miles on it and decided I'd better just make the switch now. I'm very happy I did, now I'll be saving up all my pennies for the build.

haha yea I hear ya bro same here. I think they go for a little lower here because I see a lot of 4x4 for around 7k and 4x2s for like 5k. Gonna try to clean mine up real nice and get as close as I can to breaking even. I would lift it now, but still dont have my shocks that Ive been waiting for damn near a month in the mail and I also plan on getting a 4x4 asap. like before new years, but Im gonna make sure its "the one" :)
 
i'll trade you mine, im trying to go to build a desert runner and dont need 4wd, plus we are local so if you feel like getting a lifted 98 limited 4runner with lockers let me know lol
