Thinking of selling my long travel truck

Hey guys, Ive been thinking of selling my truck and I've posted it on an IG marketplace account. I wanted to see what the mass thinks I should post my truck up for in the SoCal/San Diego market. I have some details in my build thread but have been far too busy lately to keep up with it. Keep in mind I have only owned this car since December so everything is 6 months old or 4k miles mostly street at most.

Based on my car's value and the street value of all these parts, what should I price my car at? Here is a link to the spreadsheet with all my costs.

So, this 4runner had an engine failure at 132,000 miles?

So what failed at 132,000 miles? Wonder how long your rebuilt or new engine will last!#$%?

I have about 145,000 miles on a 2005 V6 4runner and it runs (and starts up) like when it was new - still. No modification. No rust on body anywhere (amazing). I'm blown away - so far ... and from reading about other owners with many more miles.:artist2:

Nothing done but oil changes at 5000 miles on my 4runner. Always just conventional oil. Coolant done at dealer one time at 105,000 miles. Getting ready to do a coolant change (1 gallon of new - drain and fill?) in the driveway. Any advice? 4runners hold a little over 2 gallons of coolant. Dealer here wants over $200 to do coolant change.

BTW.. When my original starter failed after 4 years, the dealer where I purchased the 4runner wanted $900 for the part (said had to order from Japan). That's when I started to do my own "starters" and maintenance.

Never had an overheat, but 4 new starters in 15 years is ok with me. Cost of new starters at Amazon is $100. They last 4 years from new - same as the original OEM. Car is in the Bahamas and gets "started" about twice to three times as many times as a US based 2005 4runner with same miles. I keep a new backup in my garage.

Have a mechanic I call for "starters", and he comes to the house for $60 and replaces with the new Amazon starter. 2 bolts on the starter if I'm not mistaken. Takes him 40 minutes. He's a very skilled and trained boat engine (Yamahas) mechanic (20 years experience), but can fix about anything electrical or mechanical.

I had three 2005 F225 Yamahas from new on the back of a 42 foot Performance go fast (50 mph) for 14 years and sold it with one engine down and out for $60,000. A valve dropped into the piston after 12 years and destroyed (dinged) the PH (i.e., not repairable). None of the Yahamas ever lost its starter. So, that's three 14 year old starters and 14 years of starts and never a failure. Something funny about (Japanese) 4runner starters from the OEMs and other manufacturers IMO?

The remaining two 225 hp Yamahas ran and started like new still. Landed a 71.1 pound mahi-mahi in a tournament but finished second in the 2 day tournament here in the Bahamas. Have a picture of the fish and angler (who won $500 for biggest fish).

Outboard 4 strokes run at 5000 RPMs all their lives. 880 hours on mine, but some go to 5000 hours if they are Yamahas (or Hondas)!

Great build! Curious what is making you want to sell if you have only had it 6 months?

The tough thing with builds like this is you will get nowhere near the money out that you put in. Typically it will be well under half of the cost of new parts plus whatever the stock truck is worth (best case). I am curious to see what people think to list it for, but I doubt you will find a buyer for a ton more than you have put into it on parts alone. Mind you I would definitely list it higher than that and really talk it up, but realistically you are going to face a lot of people putting in the car on KBB and then try to add a little for extra parts. Ultimately, it is just tough finding that person that is looking for a build exactly like this.

Also, didn't even realize that TC had a sway bar! I need to look into that.

The engine failed at 234,000 miles, which is when I purchased it. I replaced it with a 104,000 mile engine out of a gx470. That was about 5,000 miles ago.

When I pulled the original engine, I removed the oil pan and a piston skirt fell out.

Coolant change - get a Home Depot 5 gallon bucket and large drip pan. There is a spout at the bottom of the radiator. Loosen counterclockwise and let it flow. Once empty, slowly fill with the engine running until you work out all the air. Drive it around the block, let it completely cool, check for coolant level. Refill reservoir. Watch the level for a day or 2. Good to go.

Boats - don’t get me started lol. 10k deck boats are selling for 25k here in San Diego. I kid you not I could sell my 24’ ebbtide and my 22’ Tahoe for that much right now.

Why I’m thinking of selling - 3 cars, 2 boats, a car hauler trailer. I moved into a starter home 2 years ago and the room to store all this and my tools, supporting parts, camping stuff, gym room etc has run out. Looking at 2 unit properties with my brother with at least 2 acres now. That in San Diego is in the 800k-1 million range starting. So I guess I don’t need to sell in the sense that I need to pay bills, but it’s the easiest thing to sell to upgrade, if that makes sense.

I agree with you on your assessment. My conflict is that I can put the car back to stock in about a day and parts still sell for good money off the car. I’ve never understood that. 3k for a used long travel kit all day but when it’s installed, it’s worth 1500! I would think it would be worth more installed since there’s so much labor involved!

I personally think the car is worth 10k stock. I have 14k+ in parts installed not including the engine and maintenance. That’s the part I need guidance in. Do I spend the day parting and get 20k+ on the total or try to sell it for 20k+ to someone who can appreciate the newly built setup that does 60Mph+ down whoops?

Personally, it's going to take finding that one "unicorn" buyer that is looking for a build exactly as what you have and doesn't want to do the work on a stock vehicle to get it there to get the money you are wanting to get, I would go the part out route if it were me, but you would have to consider if the work/labor that would take to put it back to stock and then sell the parts is worth it.

A really hard decision no matter which you decide.

Totally makes sense on the reason to sell. I can definitely relate to running out of room for toys.

If you have the time there is no doubt that you will get more money out of the rig that way. I feel you on the hassle though, it is definitely not a small quick project to return it to stock. I do think you would be very lucky to get someone to buy it for $20k right now even if they knew exactly what they were looking at and you were in zero rush to sell. I have nearly the same setup and can echo it is great on whoops

OP,
I think $18K is a "realistic" price. Unless you get a particular buyer, no one ever cares about how much money in modifications the seller has put in. You just have to come to accept that your going to get back about 25%-50% of the money you put into it.

Mods don't add value.

If you want to recoup mod money, take them off and sell them separately.

Second, I'd be wary of buying a truck with an engine swap done. I'd have to get it thoroughly inspected by an experienced Toyota mechanic.

My advice, price it competitively for your market plus a couple grand and hope for the best.

It'll move quickly that way, or if you want to wait for the unicorn buyer, price it high and wait.

Holy smokes - 4 starters? I've never replaced a starter on a Toyota. Wonder why you went through so many.
