Thinking of Selling

Six months and 5,500 miles later, and I'm kind of underwhelmed with my loaded 2011 Limited. My ***** list -

- The throttle response makes me feel geriatric.

- Get a little crosswind and it feels like you're trying to keep a Winnebago on the road.

- The ride doesn't settle down and feel right unless I have 400 lbs. of something in the cargo area.

- Keeping it clean is a pain in the ass, especially the rear spoiler thingy and window.

- It catches every rock on the road.

- The wind through the driver's side window is ridiculous.


Thing is, I don't know what I would replace it with. If a guy was to walk up to me with $39K cash it would be gone regardless. I just can't fall in love with this one.

Should I stay or should I go now?

Sorry, couldn't resist- Go buy a Pilot and join the masses that drive character-less vehicles. Just sayin :)
 
I think you made your mind up... If you cannot list anything you like about the car, you should find something that suits your needs and expectations....
 
Go. It's no fun not really liking what you drive. Truth is I'm not in love with my 4Runner and for a few reasons you mentioned. But it functions well for my needs and I appreciate the truck for what it is. Not many other choices for me. I will say that after 25K I like it better than I did at 5K. It was hard to give up a car. If you don't need this type of truck I would say bail.
 
I know I'll get blasted for this, but go drive a Pathfinder. I came within a squirrel hair of pulling the trigger on a new 4runner but I've backed off again because I drove a family members new Pathfinder Silver Edition.
 
Drive it like you stole it until it's out warranty. I mean foot to the floor, drop the hammer. Take it off road, tow a 2500# duck boat loaded with gear out to the swamp, drive 1000's of miles of dirt and gravel roads. Get it stuck in 3' of snow and mud out in the woods deer hunting, then dig and winch it out. Get it dirty, muddy and bloody, then clean it up and trade it in for a new one at 36K miles.
Or you could just trade it in for a Camry, my wife loves her's.

...thing is he CAN do all that stuff, and STILL keep it for 200k miles. Or- Camry.:violin:
 
Is there this much negative feedback on the 4th gen? Seems like these issues don't exist in the previous model.

Based on the "join" date of GatorGreg, 11-11-02, it is entirely possible that there was since the 4th Gen was introduced as a 2003. But who wants to go read posts from 9 years ago?
 
Just get a CUV or a car. What you listed sound like things that make an SUV an SUV. If you want big, too, maybe a minivan.
 
If you can lay out the dough, you would love the GX. It is everything the 5th gen 4Runner should have been and then some.

You might want to check out the new Jeep Grand Cherokee. It may be what you are looking for. Seems to be offroad capable when necessary, although by owning the limited runner, that probably is not high on your list of priorities. The Jeep's redesign seems to appeal to a lot of folks, does not have the high center of gravity so it may not be as susceptible to cross-winds, is not based on a truck frame and so the ride is probably more in line with what you would need. Consumer Reports seems to love it. We've always owned Toyotas and probably always will. It's just my wife and I at home now but we have the 4-runner, an 10' Camry and and a 10' Corolla sport and love all 3.
 
It sounds like you aren't happy with what are common characteristics of an SUV. A car will have better handling and will most likely have a better power to weight ratio.

Wind will still come through the window though, and it will still be a pain to clean! :D
 
My previous vehicle was a 2004 Tundra Double Cab 4x4. I loved that truck and it saved my bacon on more than one occasion. Before that I had a pre-Tacoma Deluxe Extra Long p/u. So I'm not new to Toyota 4x4s.

I got away from the pickup because I do more hauling of family stuff than dead deer these days. I'm not a car guy at all. I would *never* purchase a UAW manufactured vehicle.

Kinda limits the field. Maybe I should go look at the Nissans. Probably should have done that previously, but an Asian import only mechanic steered me away.

The one thing it does do well is long trips. I drove from STL to DTW with one re-fueling / pee stop.

More complaints -

- 16.3 mpg while nursing the accelerator. Ethanol be damned.

- No entertainment system option...what would have been so hard about incorporating a DVD drive into the Nav.

- The factory Nav system sucks bad. Droid X with google navigation makes it look like a re****ed kid.

I'd say sell it if you don't like it. I don't even think you'll lose much money when you sell it. Try other SUV/CUV and see which one you like. I tried many of them and liked 4Runner the best, but you might like something else better depending of you requirements and expectations.
 
Ummm......... Did you test drive the vehicle? Did you do any research on the vehicle? Did you do research any of the 4Runner competitors before spending $40 + K on a new vehicle?

If you did test drive it you would have known whether or not the engine had enough 'power' for you. It's amazing that coming from a 1st Gen Tacoma you would find the 4Runner lacking in power.

Did you not think that a tall - high clearence - suv would be affected by wind? Again, did you test ride the truck?

Did you test drive the vehicle with the window down if that is important to you?

Did you not know about the NAV system before you bough it? Why buy a Limited with nav if you think that the nav is so bad?

No entertainment system? Did you think that after you got the truck home it would magically appear?

You say "maybe I should go look at the Nissans" Ummm... you think? Maybe it would have made sense to do that BEFORE you bought the 4Runner.

The problem is not Toyota, the problem is not the 4Runner, the problem is a lack of research and testing before buying.

I would say move on and find something else - no sense in keeping a vehicle you dislike that much. However, I recommed in the future, to avoid another case of buyer's remorse, do your homework first.
