Thinking of trading down current car to 2nd Gen 4Runner - input requested:)

Current vehicle is a 2004 BMW 330i and I just put a couple of grand into it.

New radiator, water pump, CCV system, all new suspension Koni's and H&R springs etc etc but I'm not able to get to the track or autocross much right - 8 month old baby and 2 other children - now and I pass my old wheeling spots every day on the way back from work.

I found a 95 - I'm a huge fan of 2nd gens - and it has 3500 miles on the complete rebuild with new pistons, all machine work, worked head, new belts tranny was gone through and only 165k on it total. All reciepts for everything.

I have built ALOT of 4Runners in the past. 86 SAS, 88 bJ spacer and shackles, 2004 with Toytec, and my last 92 was about perfect but was still 3.0 slow and i went to iraq and like a dumbass came back bought a jeep and let my 4Runner get away from me....

I have had around 40 vehicle - yes i have a problem but my old, slow 92 is probably my favorite vehicle I have ever owned.

I would have made the swap already but my wife is against me buying/selling/trading and wants me to wait about year and buy a new TAcoma DBL CAB 4wd but I'm not much of a new vehicle kind of guy. So I would have to be willing to keep this runner as my only vehicle for around 5 years.

What would you all do - trade straight across? I would be taking a loss on the BMW, but the guy with it wisely will not add any money, he knows I like it and want it.

Here is my BMW - needs nothing - has some small damage on rear bumper but giving the guy a replacment in black.



4Runner may be a can of worms, but I know them inside and out.

Oh the old 92 was LC rear springs, Pro comp panhard drop bracket, extended brake lines around, BJ spacers in front and SAW torsiens, then Roger Brown 1.5" body so I could fitt the 302 swap which i sold the drivetrain and donor and then this 4Runner when i got back from Iraq and built my dream TJ, only to realize the TJ drove so much crappier than my 4RUnner.

Nah, when I got the BMW it had a hole cut in the trunk, and it has some dents and the fenders in the rear were rolled and pulled by previous - there is some rust in them as well as smaller dents around the car. The car is solid inside and out and the engine is straight - 118k miles, and as mentioned i hvae put alot of work in it.

But - I do know it's worth more - I would put it round 5500 vs his 3500 value IMO.

That's the sticker - and why it hasn't happened. For me its about smiles per mile, and 4wd and backroads give me more than going fast and corner carving.

Thanks for the input, that's exactly what i"m looking for - to hear it from the 4Runner fans, says alot to helping me realize i would be definately trading down.
 
It sounds like the only barrier here is the other guy not putting in money. Maybe sell the Beemer and have cash in pocket for a better deal? I definitely agree that it's all about loving what you drive, and if the BMW isn't doing it for you it's time to find something that will.
 
I say grab the runner. It's what makes you happy and also your bills won't get smaller down the road with the bimmer (sorry I don't like German cars so I might be a little bias)

Thats one consideration:

Fuel pump BMW = 390, 4Runner = 89
axle rebuilds BMW = 1200 4Runner = 250 750 if do a good locker
Headers BMW = 1250, 4Runner = 600
ECU BMW = 1300, 4Runner plentiful at J-Yard for 50-150

List could go on, but point made there.

The Runner gets aroudn 18 currenlty - same as my BMW in the city, but on the highway the BMW gets around 28-30 at 85 with cruise. Can't touch that in Runner.

I would probably entertain that trade if your's didn't have 220k on it:/ But looking at your build thread, seems like you just did the same exact thigns i just did to the BMW, however mine didn't have the stop leak in it:)

If your serious - hit me up may be worth a drive a ways for me and a ways for you - I think Destin area is around 7 hours for me drive time - probably not much further for you...

Test the waters and see what you could get with just selling the bmw. If you get more cash for the bow then buy the runner and have extra cash to do what you need for the runner. If you don't get any bites in the time you need then just straight trade. From the other guys perspective he is getting. Bmw that he could possibly sell again for more money then you are trading with him

Or he is going to get cash for the runner. Ultimately you should make the best decision for you, the family, and your wallet. Don't want you to get the runner through a straight trade and then find that it has had mice in the rear panels that chewed through wires or whatever.
 
I could get more if I was to sell but would be the tire kickers, and meeting people etc. have an 8 month old baby and two older kids as well as demanding job and wife. Not selling BMW as wife would only be ok with a straight trade of equal value. She knows the runner is worth less that's the issue:)
 
Destin is a solid 12hr drive for me. I go there and Pensacola every year :).

I'm serious about the trade however the Queen not so much. Tried convincing her last night. I'm not allowed to repeat what she said on here but suffice it to say it was a resounding no. Sorry and good luck with whatever you decide to do. That's a clean car for sure.
