Third starter in ~3 months?

Symptoms each time:

-Can be hot or cold
-Starter clicks when key turned as normal
-Starter begins the very start of cranking the engine before dead/silence
-All power to the car is killed when this happens, radio resets, must remove key to try again

This can happen once, I curse for a few seconds, and then it'll start right up. It can also leave me stranded for 10 minutes and then miraculously work like 30 attempts later.

The first (factory/who knows how old) starter did the symptoms above for a few days before it stopped starting all together, but was revived with a hammer tap and I got another 3 weeks out of it before it started acting up again.

So I replaced that one with some Driveworks reman'd AAP starter that had surprisingly good reviews, had no issues for a month before the same symptoms returned. This one ceased to work at all a few days later, and did not respond well to hammer taps. Dead as a doornail.

Returned that one for a higher end reman'd one, worked great for a few weeks, and now back to the same crap.

Battery is an oversized ~2 year old 900cca Exide resting at 12.7. Wiring is upgraded gauge welding wire, hammer crimped, soldered, shrunk, and was double checked today when it acted up - no damage to the wire ends or the wire itself. All other terminals tight, all grounds tight and on bare metal.

Bad luck, or ??? I really hate replacing the starter on these things, it doesn't get much easier than the first time.

Sorry for being long winded but thanks for any tips

Do you still have the original starter? If so just replace the contacts inside. These trucks seem to hate aftermarket anything.

Found a thread a bit ago of someone trying to determine if his starter was failing on here, same symptoms as mine. Lots of people jumping to saying replace the contacts (hell, I may have read that thread 3 months ago when this first happened and didn't scroll down far enough) but I guess since mine does more than just click (it tries to start for a millisecond) it points to wiring issue?

I did replace the starter fuse/relay 'fusable link' thing in the fuse box months ago. I had a wire loose on the bundle from the alternator when re-doing the big 3 wiring upgrade and it caused a nice spark when I tried to start it, and blew that thing. I'm not so much for suspecting that as it looked like an all or nothing type part.. and man was it a bi7ch to replace. Uhg

Check the battery to body ground, a weak ground there can be overloaded and cause anything grounded to the body (like the radio and ignition) to lose contact.

Aftermarket crap. Same old story over and over.

I hope you didnt give them your old OEM starter that just needed the contacts replaced.

If so I would look at a junkyard, ebay or used online seller to get a used OEM.
