Third vs. Fourth

I once went from a base model 3rd gen 4cyl, 5 speed, AM FM CASS, to a loaded 4th gen SE. What a difference. That SE was a luxurious vehicle and had the off-road ATRAC capabilities, hell it even had power windows and locks :whoo:. I really liked that 4th gen but IMO, if I had a loaded 3rd gen the switch would have not been so grand. And those 3rd gens really grow on you whereas the 4th gen was just a tool I used often.

Personally I dislike the look of the 4th gen 4runner. I like 5th gen and 3rd gen the most. I own a 3rd gen my self. I work at the dealership here and we see them all on for service they maintain well you cant go wrong choosing either. It sounds like 4th gen may be a better suit for you just because they made them a little larger and they even have larger fuel tanks (23 vs. 18.5) You will be able to find 3rd gens for a little cheaper than 4th gen. Superchargers are also more readily available for 4th gen that 3rd gen. If you are that worried about power the v8 4th gen may be the way to go

You need to find the right spec 4th gen. A sport edition of any year with a solid color (gray looks incredible), the sport edition wheels and a spoiler looks amazing, whereas a 4th gen without the spoiler looks as if it's missing something on the back. Mine has no spoiler yet but it's on the to-do list.

Gotta be honest, I didn't even know there was an SE! I thought it was SR5, Sport, and Limited for the 4Gs

I agree with you on that. I like the 4th gen look. If I get one is like a white one then add the black TRD Pro wheels and BFGoodrich T/A KO-2s.

2005 + models all had the current 5 speed; which worked better for towing. Less harsh than the 4 speed when downshifting into 3rd gear at 70 mph.
SE had the x-reas suspension, you might want to avoid that on an older car. I understand it's costly to repair.
2006 have chrome bits , which I didn't like.

I hope this thread isn't considered dead because I finally got rid of my jeep and I have some potential options I want to run by you all.

The first is a 2005 sport 4wd V6. It's that grey-blue color. It has 143,xxx miles on it, cloth, JBL stereo, garage kept, etc. Guy wants $11,250 for it. It's 90 miles from my location

The next is a 2003 Limited V8 4wd. Black with tan leather (in great condition I might add), obviously all the goodies. It's at a dealer in Texas, 308 miles away. Clean carfax. 122,xxx miles and they want $10,900.

The next is about 100 miles away, and all I know so far is it's a 2005 limited. I need to call the dealer tomorrow and ask for more details but he told me about it after I inquired about a 2007 he'd already sold.

I really don't tow, but I feel like the 1-2mpg difference would be neglegable. The advantage of the V8 to me, would obviously be torque and sound along with it just being a V8 after all. I drive about 50 highway miles daily so I can see it getting about what my 3.8 wrangler did, which was around 16.5. Maybe better because I had to wrap that 200hp mopar up to get it to move.

My ONLY concern, is the timing belt. I've yet to see one listed in service on a carfax report. I didn't expect to be really but I was hopeful. That and no dealer I've talked to knows if their stock has had it replaced. I did get the classic "if it needed replaced we would have done it" from a salesman. Sure you would've dude.

Anyways, the 4.7 being an interference motor my concern is I really don't have the extra cash to throw around on a belt right now. That one in Texas I would if I did it myself, if I could do it with a buddy in a weekend. I'm pretty coherent with motor work so it wouldn't be over my head.

On the other hand, with a 4.0 I do gain some mpgs, and in my line of work sometimes when certain catastrophic weather events arise, a lot of driving is involved.

My use will be as a commuter, light off roading, camping, etc.

I feel like if I could get the 6 for about $10k to 10500 I could be happy with the price. I don't really care about heated leather seats or any of that. My concern is will I later be thinking "dang, I shoulda gone with the V8" or "crap, this thing sucks down gas faster than my grandpa can finish a 5th, shoulda got a V6".

I know in the end only I can make that final decision. I really don't want to start a displacement battle because I've seen what those are like on here. I guess I'm asking if you were deciding between the two, what would you pick?

Well, this V6 owner recommends that you go with the V8. Regardless of whether or not you plan on towing anything, you may want to install armor (bumpers, sliders, skid plates, etc.) in the future. The V8 will not really be affected much by the added weight, whereas the V6 is DEFINITELY affected by the extra weight of armor. Yes, I understand the timing belt concerns, but consider asking the ignorant sales people if they would be willing to eat the cost of a timing belt replacement (since they cannot confirm a replacement already being done). I KNOW OTHER DEALERS HAVE DONE THIS IN THE PAST for two different T4R.org members whom were shopping for a V8 Runner. If you show up with cash in hand, and tell them that you are willing to purchase the vehicle immediately IF they write the timing belt change into the deal, they just might agree!

That makes me feel better. I'll probably try to grab one from the classifieds on here honestly. I haven't had much luck with the conventional auto sale sites.

I know 06 got the facelift, was 05 the change in the 4.7 that gave it a little more horsepower but not as much torque?

Always had V8 from 03-09 . Transmission was upgraded from a 4 speed to 5 in 05 -09 . Body style change in 06 . :humble: Personally I always liked the 2nd gen due to its true tailgate,5 sp manual & really liked it when guys came up with an oem switch to the 3.4 V6 , that body style & 3rd I think were best ever yet & you see what I own !!!

work the dealer as much as possible on the timing belt stuff. if you cant see stamp of when it was done and if they don't have the service records (if the previous owner didn't keep them) then definitively work that on them. Since it is interference if that belt goes the engine is toast. stress that to the max

Earlier this year I sold my Honda element in search of a 4th gen 4runner. As I looked more into it, I really wanted an 05+ with a V8 (and 4wd, of course). It would be my DD along with my motorcycle (03 Suzuki SV650). I don't have any other vehicles, and I'm single without kids. My budget was $10k and I pretty quickly realized that 05+ v8 4wd was not only hard to find down here, but definitely not in my price range without having something fishy going on. I always liked the looks of the 3rd gens better, so it didn't break my heart to revert back to a 3rd gen. I paid $5k for my 02 SE 4we with a well maintained 234k on the odo. After having this thing for a few months, I absolutely LOVE this truck. It is definitely a little anemic compared to the 4th gen v6, and puny compared to the v8, but has enough juice to do anything I need it to, including towing motorcycle trailers.

All this to say that I don't think you can go wrong either way!
