This is the engine the 4runner needs

This looks like it would be just about the ideal engine for the 4runner. Diesel like low rpm torque (348 @ 1500) and still making plenty of HP 310 at 5600. Very light (serveral hundred pounds lighter than a diesel...) Should result in almost 30mpg too....

I wish Toyota could pull it off, but I just don't think they have the passion or focus on the truck market to do it. They are so far behind. This engine has been in development for a long time....

Not so sure I would want it in a full size though. Perfect for the mid size and I'm guessing they will put it in the Colorado.

youre kidding me... 30mpg??? might be time for me to switch brands

Nothing announced on MPG yet, but I would expect at least 28mpg hwy. I have a 5.3 and it gets 24 easy... and this should be at least 25% better. They have packed in a ton of economy focused tech into it. This is the engine program that has been in development for meeting CARB standards. So I would expect amazing economy. The pressure is off a bit now, so the LS small block v8 engine is still also available. The new 3.0 inline diesel is also an interesting engine in their lineup, but I'm just spooked by all modern US diesels. The systems simply can't be that reliable because of the emissions compromises.
 
If given the option between turbo 4, v6, and v8, I'd take the v6, its the sweet spot for efficiency and simple reliable power. That is coming from someone whose last 2 cars were turbo 4 Subaru's. My Sti (6 spd manual) got a whopping ~17 mpg, about what my 4R gets. My forester (with the cvt) got ~30 mpg. That Chevy has all of the cylinder deactivation, start stop, 8 speed transmission and even the adjustable firing position that the Tacoma has. No thanks to any of that. Sure the power may be pretty great, but all of that other stuff is just too much of a hassle long term, at least for me.
 
I would like a full size crew cab v6 diesel turbo/ electric at 30 mpg+. I love my wifes 17 runner murdered out and we plan on keeping this one for awhile. I'm intrigued by the 4cyl turbo chevy trucks for mpg. I don't tow anything but could use a truck bed for projects around the house.

Comparing it to a subaru is complete apples and oranges. This is a truck engine with a truck torque curve.... made for towing...

I will admit the actual real world MPG may not be that great since your foot will tend to be in it soaking up that instant torque.. But if you baby it.. it should do real well. It's very seamless technology they way they implement it.. Nothing like the Tacoma, which is a car engine and transmission in a truck. The 3rd gen Tacoma drivetrain is an epic fail for Toyota. Even if all the bad reviews are just hype.. they have done a poor job of managing the message. Too bad because they nailed the styling... Just blew it on the engine.

I must be one of the lucky few because I’ve had the same Toyota engine for about 7 years without issue or drama.

Yea, but these are simple EFI electronics that have been in use for a long time relatively trouble free. Variable valve timing, dual scroll turbos, cylinder deactivation via oil control, direct injection. It's proven tech.

Its not like a DPF system on a diesel that is guaranteed to clog with soot...those type of system are inherently unreliable by design.

Granted, it is not as simple as a pushrod v8 with port injection, but we are obviously at a point where that simplicity has to go in favor of efficiency. People argued fuel injection was not that reliable at one point and that a carburetor was the only thing that could be maintained with reliability... Obviously past that now.. But some jumps of tech were unnecessary.. The double overhead cam was eventually proven to be unnecessary for efficiency.. there was more to gain with better combustion chamber and port designs..

It gets the job done.. but they can't stay competitive with the current power plant for another 5 years. Its barely acceptable in the market at the moment. A few more years and it just won't make any sense.
 
I'm the only Japanese car guy in my family, everyone else has GMs and they haven't had real problems with any of them until the most recent generation Yukon.

I like that GM is not jumping on the turbo bandwagon like Ford with their crappy EcoBoost engines.

I'd consider one of these but I'm downsizing all my vehicles.
 
If it has a turbo then it'll need replacement at some point and that=$$. Don't get me wrong, love turbos just not in my truck.

So you are saying if Toyota offered this engine for the 4runner with better fuel economy and a much more usable truck oriented power band as an option.. you would opt for the more thirsty normally aspirated v6 with less power in because of simplicity and long term reliability?

I understand that some might choose a v8 with more output.. but can't imagine wanting less power and economy just for simplicity and long term (150+K reliability).

I personally would not want a full size truck with a turbo 4 (it's just not quite enough power).. but I think it would be about ideal for the 4runner or Tacoma if it had similar output and power band of the engine being discussed.

There are so many better 2.0 liter 4 cylinder engines, take this one for example:

The answer is yes. We looked at other full size trucks while in the market for a replacement for our Tacoma and I looked at all brands of trucks and we went with the Tundra. I like the F150 but turned off by the thought of possibly having to replace the turbos and the V8 is only offered in their high end models. Plus the sound of the V8 is epic, I heard a new Raptor with an exhaust on it and it sounds horrible. I'd still rather have the bullet proof reliability especially since we tow and haul with our trucks. Just my preference

I know I would. If i wanted power and features and fuel economy I would have gotten a Grand Cherokee or LR5. As cool as those vehicles are every time I pull up next to one those, or a Defender, or RR, or G-Wagon. I can't help but think how I'm the lucky one.

You really want a 150hp engine in the 4runner? That is the problem with small diesels.. very limited HP because they can't rev. Decent tq but you need HP to run at speed and we go pretty fast here in the US.

And Toyota will never be able to sell a diesel in the US unless all diesel emission laws are rolled back. It's simply not going to happen. It's just not cost effective for them. They don't own the technology. And they are actually smart to stay away from it since it is a major liability in terms of warranty.
