The future is in twin turbo V4 for Toyota/Lexus, not diesel...at least in the US.

The new LS500 makes over 400 hp in a twin turbo V4 and kills the power of the former V8 with better MPG.

People defending the 4.0 are doing a dance. It is straight obsolete.

The future is going to be hybrid drivetrains where you have electric motors used for torque fill…

It’s already happening today, like in the LS500, and it’s only a matter of time until this becomes trickle down tech.

It also makes the most sense... max torque at 0 RPM, ideal for trucks, big torque, low maintenance, perfect for off-road and crawling tasks, and the gas motor takes care of the rest.

I was told by a friend at a dealership that the 4runner motor is the highest polluting engine they currently offer so I imagine it’s on its way out the door one way or another.

Could be bs I’m not claiming he’s right but he’s a GM.
 
This is a pretty good example of what we'll likely see in about a 2.5L form is my guess.

A 175HP is not enough to go 120mph in these trucks. You can't argue with physics. HP is not some mystery measurement. It's simply torque as it relates to speed. Lots of torque feels good at low RPM, but if you can't make some HP you won't go anywhere fast. Diesels suffer from an extremely slow burn rate and a lot of big heavy slow moving internals and a long stroke. It requires a big diesel with a crap ton of boost (like 90psi) to make significant HP. At that point there is so much unburnt fuel that it would clog up a DPF (required by the EPA) in minutes. Diesels have many applications, but they don't have a great future in the US for non dedicated tow vehicles and heavy equipment. They produce too much pollution. Simple as that.. And the counter measures clog up quickly and are very problematic (especially at extremely high output). Diesels work best with all the emissions crap at a steady load (not too high,,, not to light)

The future (long term) for passenger cars and light trucks is engines that are petrol but run with diesel like compression ignition for extreme efficiency. For now, it will most likely be petrol gas engines that offer extremely flat torque curves that don't fall off at RPM like a diesel of similar displacement.

It's amazing my last trip back the Land Rover Freelander 2 diesel (LR2) with 147hp I rented got up to 220km/h just fine, you do the math back to MPH. A 1.3L petrol Yaris I rented got up to the limiter of 188km/h just fine too. My dad's Land Rover Defender diesel got to 180km/h regularly too.
 
The real question is how long did it takes to get to 220 kph (136 mph)…

Sometimes just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.

4Runner is the perfect example of something you should NOT be doing 136 mph in, even if it CAN.

At least for what I do with the truck, I’ll take some muscle and acceleration over top speed capability any day of the week.

My point is, every other market the world except NA, seems to manage just fine with their MUCH lower powered diesel engines. Everyone back in SA laughs at the fact that I have 4L petrol engine in my Toyota.
 
When I drive in town, I actually leave the spare at home. Literally saves like 60+ pounds off the ass end. Yeah I know it's a risk but i work in basically a 20 mile radius so worse case I have to have my wife drop off the spare....

I do the same thing, and drive like the old man I am (62, not dead yet). Never more than 15 miles from home, else I throw the spare in back and cable it to the floor hooks. I get 20 mpg using premium. I'm happy with it.

Most markets have $6-8/gal fuel, and accept far lesser performance for better fuel economy. Markets with high incomes and/or cheap fuel buy gas engines for light duty vehicles. 12 second 0-60 will not sell in markets with $2-3/gal gas. SA has about $4.50USD/gal gasoline, but it's also a low income country. Relative to income levels, fuel is very expensive. Toyota is exceedingly unlikely to put the 1GD-FTV in a 4runner. There's no reason for Toyota to bring a diesel to the USA market for the very limited sales.

To put this in a more concrete perspective, the USA has the 3rd lowest cost of fuel relative to average daily income in the world. South Africa is the 6th highest. A gallon of gas costs 1.64% of an average daily income in the USA. It costs 23.64% of an average daily income in South Africa. If a gallon of gas costs $37 in the USA that would be equivalent to what it costs in south africa. Acceleration would be low on my list of requirements in a vehicle at $37/gal.

I live in Canada, do you know we're currently paying approximately $5USD per gallon? Gas is expensive for us, cost of living is higher and income is lower, but we get the same vehicles as the US. Follow my drift yet?

Canada is the 9th cheapest fuel relative to income. Yet it's still double the cost per income vs the USA. Norway is more expensive than Canada. The fuel costs simply don't matter as much in the USA. Performance and clean air are more important.

Specifically Canada is 2.96%, Norway is 3.4%.

Canada is a small market. It's unlikely to get a diesel option simply because there are so few sales that it wouldn't be economical to provide parts support and maintenance. Canada and USA emissions rules are effectively the same. So they're higher on paper than almost anywhere else in the world. I also suspect Canada has more honest emissions rules than Europe. Europe has rules but allows manufacturers to emit 10-40 times the limit in real world use. I doubt Canada will look the other way.

I think the answer is more simple at times… people buy what they like, and manufactures make what will sell.

It’s a consumer driven market, and the consumers want bigger and better things. Manufactures are going to make what sells and what the larger market share demands. Part of this is also legislative when it comes to diesel in the states.

Fact of the matter is, there is something here for EVERYONE. It’s not like we don’t have small motors… If you want to be efficient and have a small carbon footprint, there is a car for you, and if you want a 800 HP production car, a Dodge Demon is right around the way too.

I see many brands doing new and innovative things... but Toyota seems to ignore or perhaps misinterpret the enthusiast market. That's where my Toyota gripes come from.

There is some correlation to gas price and income… when we had the recession in 2008 / 2009 the couldn’t give away Tundra trucks with a slow economy and $5 gallon gas. It changed the landscape of 1/2 ton and larger trucks for non-commercial buyers during that time.

Our current national average is $3 gallon.

It's amazing that other manufacturers sell and support different engine types in Canada (and the US). Mercedes does it, BMW does it, Chevrolet does it, GMC does it, Jeep does it, Nissan does it, RAM does it, VW does it, Land Rover does it, Jaguar does it. Toyota does not do it.

THat'll curb obesity. We'd be forced to walk instead of drive and hike instead of offroading
