this makes my head hurt...

well i have just spent too much money in this truck... it seems to be a big money pitt for me... i just put in a new timming chain (700.00)... TRD clutch (1200.00)... new radiator(220.00) and the engine rebuilt... too much money... and the rims and tires and the 4'' lift ... that cost me (3000.00)...

but i loved the truck until it just started over heating on me... i cant figure out what it is?? it makes my head hurt because i dont see anything wrong... im thinkin that the heads are blone?? would that be my problem?? or would it be something else??

i need some help here...

Typical problems can be:

bad t-stat
clogged radiator
bad water pump
air pocket stoping coolant flow

If you think it might be a bad head gasket, check for coolant in the oil, and white smoke and a sweet smell coming out the exhaust pipe.

If you're the slightest bit mechanically inclined, you really should get a Factory Service Manual and learn how to do some of the work yourself, and save a bunch of $$$$$$.

well there is white smoke that comes out of the pipe in the mornin and after it gets done over heating... and sometimes it runs ruff after... would that be the headgasket??

A blown head gasket won't make your engine overheat. Rather, overheating the engine will cause a blown head gasket.

There are only a few reasons why your engine is overheating.

Either the coolant isn't flowing properly due to something blocking the coolant flow, or there isn't enough air moving through your radiator, and that's basically it.

But the hard part is up to you to inspect and find the reason, but here's some ideas where to look.

Coolant not flowing:
With radiator cap off, and engine hot, you should see coolant flowing into the radiator from the water pump. If it looks like it's just stagnant, you can surmise it's a coolant flow problem. The motor must be warmed up already to do this check. A cold engine will have a closed t-stat and coolant won't flow. Blockage could be caused by a bad water pump, or bad t-stat, or a clog in any part of the coolant system, including a vapor lock.

Insufficient air flow:
blocked or dirt-clogged radiator or condenser coils. If you hold a flashlight up against one side of the radiator, you should be able to clearly see the light on through to the other side. Make sure no paper or other crap is blocking the radiator/condenser. Is the plastic fan shroud missing, broken, or not on correctly? Don't know if your 4runner has electric fans or belt driven fan, but fan must turn fast enough to move air - belt driven fans have a clutch that can go bad, electric fans can have bad motor.

I know its a goofy thing to think of but if the radiator came with plugs in the holes the hoses go on and someone didnt pull them before putting the hose on ... well you can see how that would end

You can squeeze the hoses and feel the coolent flowing.

Stuck thermostat

Start with the simple stuff.

If you are blowing white smoke its coolent,are you loosing coolent.

is the coolent in your oil?

well my truck runs great when it rains... didnt over heat today... i dont get it... would it be that it just over heats when its hott??

You can squeeze the hoses and feel the coolent flowing.
