I am disappointed. I thought the FJ cruiser was going to be discontinued and maybe the 4runner would be more trail capable. I was hoping for 4.6 V8, rear locker and height adjustable suspension. It looks like the new Grand Cherokee will own this market. I swore I would never buy another Jeep but there may be no alternative. Also I was hoping the new 4runner would be a little smaller but it is bigger in every way. I guess I will have to keep my 03 V8 longer than planned.

Wow, I haven't seen this before. If it is true, there are a lot of changes that are a bit a shock to me:

"Enhcanced sporty looks, return to it's roots."

Translation, it will look less like an Explorer and more like a 4Runner. I guess we will have to see. The size is about the same, so I wonder if they really can pull this off. I really like the idea of .9" extra ground clearance.

New 4.0 V6 and 2.7 I4.

Does this mean, the 4.0 is all new and our 4.0 is now dirt? Hopefully, they just changed some items, unless they thought our 4.0 is terrible??????

The 2.7 is a super shocker, translation, no V8 and the 4 cyl will have to move a slightly larger vehicle. I was hoping if they put a 4 cyl in, it would be a smaller vehicle. A smaller vehicle would be more fitting with the times and more like my third generation model. Right now, I really can't see a 4 cyl in my fourth gen. maybe the 5th gen will somehow be lighter???

20" wheels available, wow, put that on a 4 cyl vehicle and it won't be able to move. To me, 20" wheels is a bit strange on a 4X4. More of a street type car.

Anyway, something to look forward to in August. Anyone with pictures gets T4R's thanks. So, if you see one uncovered, PLEASE TAKE A PICTURE.:D
 
As far as the drive-train goes, it shouldn't be much of a surprise. Toyota said a few years ago that all engines and transmissions would be redesigned for better performance, efficiency, emissions, etc. by the beginning of the next decade. And last year sometime, I remember an article that said that it was likely that some V-8's would disappear replaced by V-6's, and some V-6's replaced with 4's---but that better designs in engines/transmissions would result in higher HP, better torque, better fuel efficiency, cleaner, etc. than the current engines of similar displacement (yeah I know, nothing is going to replace the low end torque of the V-8's).

With the economy killing sales particularly of lower mileage vehicles, fuel prices, environmental regulations, and higher fuel efficiency required by the auto manufacturers, I for one had no doubt that the V-8 was a goner. The 4banger, that seems WAY too small for this vehicle, but I'm sure it's only in there to increase the fleet mileage for regulatory compliance. The V-6 is solid. If it's being redesigned for more HP and a little more torque, even better.

I understand were you're coming from about the V-8, and I would be pissed too if I had one and actually used it's full power capability. It's why I still have a 23 year old Suburban that I use twice a year to haul one heavy trailer. But the days of the high output, low mileage iron horse are over. I guess I'd rather take my chances that Toyota did a good job on making the 5th generation a good vehicle overall without the option of a V-8, than not having a new model of 4Runner at all and seeing it discontinued.

This V-6 and hopefully the redesigned one as well is still a hell of alot more powerful and at way better efficiency and less emissions than some of the crap everyone one of us used to drive even ten years ago.

Can someone explain to me why there is more ground clearance on the 2wd versus the 4wd? Isnt that the dumbest thing ever.

I like that they are redesigning the stereo system...the current 10-speaker JBL sucks pooty. Glad to see they are incorporating new technology (USB port, IPOD controls, tailgate speakers) into the sound system.

Cant wait to see this one? I seen the specs but I wonder how much bigger this generation will be....It looks considerably longer.

Still waiting for a whole foot of ground clearance on 33" tires.....stock.....now that is a trail edition!!
 
There are some things I don't like from the two .pdf's that have been posted.

Lack of a V8 (I can live with this, but in full-time 4WD I'm not so sure)

The Antenna.

Forced to get the X-Reas on the Limited. I liked the X-Reas on my Limited, until it started leaking.

My main beef is the 3rd row seating on the Limited, it seems to be standard from the other .pdf. I'd rather have storage and will looking into having them removed and a lockable hatch put in place, if I like the new model.

But, 20" wheels on a 4wd?!? I went to tire rack and ran the 20" size they list, no tires, are decent all terrain tires even made in 20"?

Can't wait to see it though.

Maybe TRD will come out with a supercharger.

The Trail Edition w/ leather looks most appealing.

I guess I don't know if I like any of the trim levels. Ideally, I would like a V8 4WD Limited without the 20 wheels, without the third row seat, and with all of the off-road features of the Trail Edition. Some meaty 18" tires would be perfect on all 4WD models. I would be tempted to just by a Trail Edition with leather, except I am 100% turned away by the black over-fenders, bumpers, mirrors and door handles. Everything should be color-keyed, not black. Toyota should have learned this lesson back in 2003!

Your actually completely wrong. Toyota did learn their lesson that why the black fenders are on the trail edition ONLY. When your offroad, plastic fender flares are the first things to get damaged which is why toyota made them black so they hide the scuffs etc etc. I don't understand your rationale at all for that because it makes no sense.

I'm glad I own the fastest/most powerful 4runner toyota will have ever made.
 
I have read here on the forum and other places that the new 4Runner was going to have a new V8. I bet my bottom dollar that it was going in, but Toyota made a last minute change. I am also surprised that they are putting in the 4 cyl that I assume is in the new Highlander. They usually don't put a front wheel drive car engine into a truck base SUV.

Also, I would think the V6, being a 4 liter is plenty good for our 4Runners. If you think about it, it is only 700cc less than the V8. Hopefully, they made the right decisions. I am actually keen on driving one when they come out.
 
Tell you one thing, when they come out, I'll be test driving the 4.6l Lexus and if there is a massive diff, I'll shell out the coin and get it.

I really cannot believe Toyota dumped the V8.

I personally like the two-tone of my 03 V8 with the nonpainted flares better. That is why I bought it. I didn't care for the solid colors they had at the time. But what do I know, I actually like the FJ. No scuffs, no door dings, no rock chips. Some like it, some don't. It doesn't look like every other 4runner out there. If there is a market for a $45k volvo station wagon with nonpainted bodycladding, I think there will be people that would love it on a $35k 4Runner. just my 2 cents worth.

I would like to think the basics of the truck haven't changed much. The new V6 is the same as the old V6, just new timing and programming (assumption: just added "dual" VVT-I). The 4cyl is probably out of the Tacoma. They already run the same six so it would probably be an easy retrofit to get the 4 in. I would like a little of the FJs styling incorporated into the new one. Not the Sequoia / Highlander / tundra styling. Why have 4 models looking identical just with different sizes. Too cookie cutter for me. Give me more headroom, less windshield rake, square off the lines, a rear locker, and a panoramic sunroof and I am sold. They truck is pretty capable as it is.

And WTF is up with the color choices. white, black two shades of silver, red, and blue. Give us something different. Maybe another green or a nice copper color. Or how about another shade of silver.:bash: I really hope this isn't another cookie cutter SUV.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. It has a 2.7, you are probably right about that. I think the Highlander 2.7 gets 180ish HP, I think the horsepower on this one is 161 or so, which is closer to the Tacoma.

Just yesterday, I spoke with the General Manager friend of mine of the second largest Toyota dealership here in town on the follow up to the lack of 4.6 V8 with six speed tranny that was 'supposed' to go into the 2010 model 4Runner.

He told me that the factory has shelved the V8 option 'for the time being'. The efforts of the factory are in building the new generation of Prius and other price sensitive and fuel efficient models like the Camry.

40% of all his new vehicle sales is the new Prius.

The Gen Mgr is headed to a dealer's meeting in the next two weeks and if there's an update, he'll be calling me.

I was going to step to the table re: the new 4.6 V8 and six speed tranny model but will wait as the 4.7 V8 is doing fine... save for the driveline clunk which gets obnoxious at times, even though I've done all I could with semi-regular injections of grease in the driveline that works temporarily.

My "rationale" for this is that according to the posted Canadian spec sheet, that the Trail Edition comes with black bumpers, door handles fenders, ect...and that the Limited does not get any of the Trail Edition's off-road options. Current models have a good mix. I would like to see the same options on the Trail Edition available on the fully loaded Limited without 20" road spec tires. I would assume that most people would prefer color keyed bumpers opposed to black.
 
It still makes no sense. Why would anyone who is going to use it as intended want things that would show the damage more. Look at the fj, nobody is complaining about its black fenders,bumpers.

Be happy and trail edition even exists and that toyota is even offering it.
