Those of you with scantool2, torque and the like...

Can you tell me what you're ECT reads temp wise once you engine is warmed up?
I've had an intermittent high idle with the occasional hard warm start lately. After many searches and grabbing some info from my Chilton manual it looks like the ECTsensor plays a part in telling the ECU on whether or not to open the IAC (cleaned that too).
Long story short, it's not easy to get the sensor out and testing resistance with it in the block and the car warm proved difficult because I didn't have a safe way to drop a thermometer in the coolant to see exactly where the resistance should be. That being said I bought an ultra gauge - I like tools and its cheaper than a scantool or the wifi adapter for my iPhone.
I hooked the gauge up today and took the truck for a spin. The whole time the temp from the ECT didn't get over 180 and often sat at 150. On one occasion it dropped to 80 and I saw the revs jump immediately. Even at 180 the engine would idle in the 900s; she used to purr at ~700.
The only other thing I could think of would be the thermostat, however, from experience they don't cause an intermittent problem like this. They're usually stuck open.
Regarding the ECT, has anyone had luck with aftermarket sensors? I can save $20 by not going oem.

BTW, this is a 98 sr5 4wd with a 3.4.

Thanks!

Mine usually runs between 195 -205f at any speed or idle I have electric fans I took the fan clutch off and my radiator is las than a year old, I also have ECT. Never seen it go above 205 and Im also supercharged. The rpms at idle after warm up stay around 650 unless the ac is on then it jumps to 750 when the compressor runs 01 v6 3.4 sr5 4wd, i got the temperature from torque with the Bluetooth scanner.

OEM for all sensors is a credo I live by, unless one can get the sensor made by the manufacturer for a cheaper price (think Denso O2 sensors vs Toyota). Don't do it.

Any codes?

Using the Scangauge ii:188~195

Using the Blue Point Microscan Pro: 190~194

Using the Snap On Solus: 188~194

All in F degrees.

As a follow up I swapped out the ECT sensor and the high idle has been resolved. Beyond the surging idle the truck runs much smoother now. On the road she'll be between 190-205*F and idling at ~675 when warmed up.
Supercharged and Caesar, thanks for your help!
