I am new to this forum and this is my first post. I just purchased a Black 2004 4Runner Sport Edition V6 and I want an exhaust system that looks better than the stock black resonator with a killer sound without any resonation. I'm not too worried about performance as long as I don't lose any, I get plenty of fast seat time in my Z06.:D

I have the Borla 140017 catback on my Z06 and love the sound, but CANNOT stand the resonation from 1700-2100. Does the Borla catback for the 4Runner have any resonation? How much louder is it compared to stock while cruising? Will the 140036 system fit the 2004 also?

I would also like to hear from those with the Magnaflow catback. I really like the look and on other vehicles their systems don't have any resonation. Will the 2003 system that they list for the V8 fit the 2004 V6? I called Magnaflow today and they could not confirm that it would fit without modification. How's the sound compared to stock? Any resonation?

This looks like a very cool place to hang out, thanks for any info you can help me with.

Borla really increases the sound and resonates right around 2000 rpm. It really drones from around 68-72 mph, but you get used to it. (My son, who is 1, imitates it if you ask him what a truck does. Can't do that if it is quiet.) Supposedly SUV's have droning problems with many aftermarket exhaust due to the sound resonating in the cargo area (read that somewhere). I guess it is just a theory, but I believe it.

The borla should bolt on to either the V6 or V8. I put mine in and the fit was excellent. Not sure about the Magnaflow.

I like the look of that tip, it looks like the same one used on their(Magnaflow) catback. I was going to do the same thing until the wife said she wanted a more agressive sound. All Borla systems that I have used on Corvette's and Mustangs have resonated and I don't want that. Too bad Corsa doesn't offer an exhaust system for the 4Runner. :confused:

Well, if you want agressive sound, the Borla definitely is. The resonation isn't really related to speed, more to RPM. It is the loudest around 2000 RPM. If you cruise over 75 or under 70, it is not bad at all compared to stock (still louder, but not annoying). Between 70-75, it can be grating during long trips. I have a video from inside my 4Runner while I am driving with the windows up that would give you an idea of how loud it is. Let me know if you are interested and I can compress it down and send it to you if you are interested.

I too am interested in this video. I was considering getting the Borla for my rig but wasn't sure about the resonation. Let me know how I can get that from you too!
 
I'll dig it out this weekend and get it compressed to something I'm able to e-mail or set up on my Yahoo webspace (it is limited in size though). I guess I could always AIM it. Do you guys have AIM?

does anyone actually HAVE the magnaflow exahust?

I'd take that over ANY other system since they have a straight through, non baffled design. . .might be as loud as the Borla, but eh, just wondering. . .

I had the Magnaflow exhaust on my 2000 GMC Sierra with the 4.8L V8 (background of the screenname). It sounded very nice, and was a very high quality system. It did not have that legendary Borla sound however, but it did sound nice. I'm not sure what that would sound like on the Toyota V8, but I know it will not sound bad. I think I would rather go for the Borla however, because its quieter overall and meatier sounding IMO.
 
borla vs. magnaflow

man, the magnaflow is A LOT cheaper than the borla, it can be had for about $400 on the web. . .the borla costs about $600-700. . .

are there differences between the two?

They are both catbacks right? The borla just has a split at the end, and the magnaflow just exits passenger rear? I'm just wondering.. . .wouldn't want to fork out the extra $200 for a borla just so it can have dual tips.

The Borla quiter than the Magnaflow, are you sure that's not backwards. Borla's sound great, but have very bad resonation problems which I don't want on my Runner.
 
I have the borla catback on my 03 V8 and it drones pretty bad around 2k rpm. Around town it's not too bad, but on the freeway it gets kinda annoying after awhile. I'm thinking about taking it off and putting the stock system back on or just replacing the muffler with something quieter.
 
Well my friend has a Borla on his V6 Mustang a 95 BMW M3 and they both sound beautiful. The exhaust does drone on both the M3 and the 'Stang, but its not terrible. The M3 actually drones much less than the Mustang, more like the stock exhaust. I have a feeling all aftermarket exhaust systems will drone to some extent, I would say the Borla is the best sounding overall. If you don't want a drone, I would say stay with the stock exhaust. All exhaust systems drone, even the factory - the factory system is just quiet enough that you don't hear it.

Just turn up the stereo... you'll be fine :thumb:

The stock exhaust on my '04 Runner V6 doesn't resonate at all, can't even hear it. The stock exhaust on my Z06 didn't resonate at all either. The Borla on my Z06 DOES resonate terribly. The Magnaflow on the Vette's does NOT resonate at all, just a nice rumble. Actually the Magnaflow is very quiet on Vette's. I'm getting the Magnaflow and will report my thoughts in a few weeks.

Well, I see you're getting the Magnaflow. I tried to AIM you when you would pop up, but I was blocked. Well, let me know how the magnaflow sounds. If there is no droning, might just have to switch. I'll have to compare the sound btw the two.
 
Sorry Bool! I had the preference checked to block anyone not in my buddy list. I appreciate the effort and will post feedback and sound files when I get the Magnaflow installed.

Any idea when that will arrive? While you're out there taking sound clips of your Runner... Get some of the Vette too!
