Thoughts on buying a '04 4Runner Limited 165k miles for $9000???

I currently have a 99 Tacoma that needs a bunch of money put into it. So I've been thinking about either trading or selling it.

Found an '04 Runner Limited with I would say are pretty high miles living on an island. Salesman at local Toyota says it was a former police vehicle. Photos look like the car is in pretty good shape but will definitely check it out.

The price and photos of the condition I like, but the miles are what worry me.

Any thoughts??? Thanks!

For sure. I was also told they idle for hours on end making the reading on the odo much higher than it shows.

I have my odometer set up to measure distance driven rather than engine running time.

After you find all the problems or wear items, and compare that against its records, add up all the repairs and consumables needed, and subtract that from the price.

In perfect shape, it's not worth more than $7000 to me. As a police vehicle, I doubt it's worth more than $5000 with all the issues you'll find.

Most likely, it's not worth buying at all unless you can steal it...

Checked it out and test drove it. Everything seemed fine but just the fact it being a cop car and all the stress put on it still has me worried.

Feel more comfortable spending a little more on something more reliable.

I've seen nice non police ones in Southern California for about that price. Maybe a little more.
