Thoughts on sas

So after having to drop the pan on my 22re I have come to he conclusion that I realy want a solid axle for more clearance with the engine which will be required when I do my engine swap. I don't want leaf springs and was thinking I would use rear coils and struts to make finding replacment parts easyer on my self. I don't have my truck to look at to see what would need done to the frame to make the perches but I'm thinking it will need some kind of loop to push the perch up in to the fender and some cutting to make the iner fenders clear the springs. I know someone has to have done this but I can't find any info on it.

Sounds like a cool idea. But is the coil swap up to your fab skills? I don't know your skill set so I am just asking. As far as a SAS goes, leaf springs are fairly common and the wheel has already been invented. If your skills are like mine then I would say do the leaf spring SAS. I can weld but not great at inventing new designs on my own. If you can fab it then go for it.

What motor swap are you going with. Is it an oil pan clearance issue?

I'm good with the part of it (I am an engineering major) my welding is not up to par but I have a freind who is a welder that owes me a favor after I rewired his harly chopper. I want to put in a tdi when cash permits and it will have oil pan clearance isues and I'm going to need to beef up the suspention anyway since it is a bit heavier and when I build the new front bumper with winch I will need to beef up the suspension to make up for that as well

Looking at photos of the frame online it looks like I'd want to chop off the stock strut mounts and replace them with a new spring perch and relocate the struts. Then have brackets for the links welded on somewhere under the front doors. I'm wanting coils for a few reasons, I want my suspention to be more tunable, I want to keep it as close to what my ride hight is now (my wife already has troble geting in the cab with 31s on the truck) and last I have already designed a winch bumper with built in brush gaurd that the shackles for leaf springs would interfere with the extra bracing.

I would go to a site like Trail-Gear and check out their installation manual (free online) for their 3-link suspension--that should give you all the mounting locations and what to chop off for yours. Personally, I would go with a pre-engineered system like theirs rather than doing the trial-and-error on something so important, but best of luck on yours!
 
Dose anybody know how much ride hight you will loose with I axle over spring set up on leafs if I deside to go the simple route? My wife already has to jump to get in to my truck with 31s and I'm not looking to do anything serious my gole wih this build is a overland expodition vehical.

With a flattish RUF spring pack, you get about 3" lift. Not a lot of up travel, lots of down travel. Good for crawling

With the TG 3" kit youll get about 4-5" total lift. Better for comfortable all around driving.
