My mom has a '95 4Runner and yesterday it sent a piston through the block. She called me and said she was on the side of the road, so when I pull up I get the 'not so fun' sight of seeing her crying and a huge puddle of oil on the ground. Looked on the passenger side in the fender well and sure enough, seen the exit wound. I know my mom wasn't driving crazy, or bouncing it off the rev limiter, but what the hell?.There was absolutely no warning signs. Just driving normal and POW! Anyways, what would be the best option? Is the head still of use? Or does it cause damage up top when the bottom end takes a dump? Thanks for any help, it is greatly appreciated! Mileage was approaching 170k.

i bet you its a v-6 its rare that a 22re does that.
and yes that motor is toast. now the head still might be okay you would just have to have it checked out. or have it rebuilt.

Need a new engine...
Obviously you need a replacement engine.
The choice of going with a Short or Long Block is really your own personal preference....
I'm sure that you could get along just fine with the short block and reusing your head. The draw back of that is those 4runners are known for head gasket issues, so if the head gaskets weren't replaced during the recall you could have some issues there...
The benefit to a long block is that chances are having everything rebuilt rather than just the lower end would give you a longer life expectancy compared to a rebuilt short block with used heads.

They are completely rebuilt, come with a 3 year warranty and the master gasket set, timing belt and oil pump. And we ship nationwide. Sorry to throw a sales pitch at ya but I know for a fact we have great motors.... my old 4runner even had one of our engines in it and runs great! I'd love to help you get which parts are right for you!
Now, as far as why a rod went thru the block.... who knows? Lost oil pressure or burnt up all its oil? Overheated and hydrolocked? Maybe it just wore out... there tons of possibilities and you may not find the reason until you get into it. Best bet is to make sure you replace all the little things you can when doing the engine replacement so that you don't have any more problems later on.
