Throttle body / MAF sensor cleaning

Cleaned them last night. Only took about an hour as the back of the TB was pretty gummed up. Easy job, here is how I did it.

You will need some CRC MAF cleaner AND CRC Throttle Body cleaner. Two different things.

- Disconnect negative battery cable
- Unplug MAF sensor and TB controller connectors
- Undo wire holders mounted on air cleaner/intake assembly, 2 snap ins and
one clip
- Undo intake hose clamp at throttle body
- Disconnect vacuum hose and ventilation hose from cleaner/intake assembly
- Remove air cleaner assembly and set aside
- Disconnect water by-pass hoses from throttle body (no coolant came out,
but had rags under just in case)
- Remove 4 bolts that hold TB
- Clean throttle body as directed on CRC throttle body cleaner bottle
- Remove MAF sensor from intake assembly and clean as directed on the CRC
MAF cleaner bottle
- Put everything back together, torque TB bolts to 15ftlb, plug the the TB
controller and MAF back in, reconnect the battery and fire it up!

Will see over the next few days what MPG does. Pics are after 200,000+ miles.

Remember to plug the throttle body controller back in before you start it back up

Update after 2+ months. Really doesn't run any different, always ran good. I did gain 0.2 MPG. I figure in 20 years it might pay for the bottles of cleaner. :biggrin1:

Just a suggestion: Top Tier gas has more cleaners and other additives than non-top tier gas, so if you use that exclusively, you may never have to clean your fuel system again.

Most national brands and Costco are top tier gas. The inferior gas is often sold at convenience stores.

Top Tier fuel has nothing to do with the back-side of the throttle body getting dirty. That dirt is coming from the PCV system and that "top tier" fuel does not keep anything cleaner in the PCV system.
The people who sell TT will tell you otherwise, though.

Yep. And I've always run top tier just by coincidence as the station I use is top tier.

Also, PCV valves are easy maintenance, I change it every so often. It's only $5.
