Throttle response hesitation

alright guys, I need your assistance.

My throttle doesnt always respond right away. it happens usually when im driving and i let off the pedal, then when i reapply pressure the rpms dont move for about 2-3 seconds. This also seems to happen occasionally when coming from a stop too.

This is happening more frequently and its starting to become a safety issue when in intersections.

i cleaned the maf a couple months ago, and it didnt change anything. air cleaner is a couple months old.

try tightning up the cables running to you throttle body. I did it on mine and it eleminated this issue.

oops saw you are in an 01. I would still check the cable (if it has one not sure)

01 has the "Drive by Wire" No cables.

To the OP, are you driving around in the AWD mode??
When I drive around in my 01 in AWD mode and take off at a light I can feel a hesitation. I think a thats normal thing when in AWD so on slippery stuff it doesn't give you full throttle.
 
Have your mechanic pull the front cover and check the timing with a light. I had a very similar problem and it was a loose crank shaft pulley affecting the timing. (edit) The toothed timing belt pulley closest to the engine was loose, not the big pulley on the front. Cheers

Sure you do if its an 2001. Its called Multi-Mode 4wd system.
The button on the side of the floor shifter that says 4WD is to engage the AWD feature (green lights) in cluster. Only when you push the button on the side of steering wheel and lock the center diff, (orange, green and VSC off lights up) then you have your typical 4WD system.

linked thread doesn't address details on adjusting throttle wire on the '01 '02 drive by wire system...

any have info on adjusting the cable on these trucks? Where the older models have 3 wires, my '02 has only 1.

01-02, There's an automatically controlled transmission kickdown, BUT THERE VERY WELL IS A THROTTLE CABLE.

We're not driving fancy new Mercedes, here.

At the same time, a loose throttle cable won't make a delay of 3 seconds if the pedal is held at a position where it at least moves the throttle spring. Tight cable or not, shouldn't make any delay. The loose throttle cable will only produce more travel in the pedal before actually twisting the throttle.

EDIT: It's like the idea that you're telling someone else to push the pedal for you, they still have a throttle cable that's pulling on the throttle for them. Go ahead, take a look.

like COB stated there is a throttle cable, its just not directly linked to the pedal. check them at the throttle body for looseness, i just did it and my runner acts like a whole different truck, its like i took 100,000 miles off it. acceleration is much faster and more precise, with no more lag and delay for kickdown. you might also want to check you fuel filter, how long has it been sense its been changed? a dirty or clogged filter can help cause hesitations same with your air filter, check them both and if in question replace them.
 
update:

well, it seems to be getting worse. now it happens pretty much every other time i hit the peddle. its almost like i have to prime the throttle cable, strange thing is it does it alot more once the engine is warmed up. not much when its cooler in the mornings.

could this have something to do with the tps?
 
it could, when was the last time you did a tune up? plugs, wires, air/fuel filters, o2 sensor... how many miles on your rig? have you checked your vacuum lines?, you could have one that is cracked or torn, or completely off...

I had to replace my TPS, but it was because my ECU didn't know the thottle wasn't being pushed... it would start dumping fuel and running like crap.

It's a start. Usually, the CEL will come on. It's unusual that you've experienced these symptoms without a check engine light.
 
yeah, i actually had to make sure my check engine light actually worked since these symptoms seem so odd.i wish a code would appear so i could diagnose.

i took it on a camping trip this weekend, it did it the whole way up. but it snowed and rained the way back and nothing. i would hate to drop the cash for a fuel filter since these are not supposed to go bad. especially living in las vegas.

sense when are fuel filters not supposed to go bad...? and its not like they "go bad", they get dirty and clogged and need to be replaced, -in any vehicle no matter what it is or where it is. and its like $15 for a new fuel filter, not that spendy, but if you dont wanta change it, you can sell me your crappy running 4runner...
