Hey guys, first post!, I have a 2006 SE V8, and when i come to a stop sign, or red light, it thumps as if it dropped a gear. What can this be? lately, it has been doing it more often, could it be my tranny? I have no mods whats so ever, and maintain regulary. thanks!

Normal unfortunately. See: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/showthread.php?threadid=975

You can grease the driveshaft, but it will come back. Many on here grease the driveshaft every oil change to keep the "thump" under control.

Yea its normal. Seems to depend on climate/location. I live in a pertty bad climate for cars, but I havent greased mine in 20k and I rarely get it.

is it a single thump or sometimes a intermittent thump, like maybe a few times at a stop sign? or at idle?

I greased my shafts and slips in the garage, without a lift in about 10 minutes. Now well over a year and 20K, no return of the clunck.

Good Luck

having the same problems on a 2002 V8. Not a mechanic and really concerned.

How can I grease the shafts and slips? Any tutorials or other suggestions online would help.

thanks

Sick a v8 in an 02, do you have a build thread!?

Search is your friend, you dug this year old thread up.

i get the same noise. thinkin its normal even tho i dont like it. ALSO, when im on a hill waiting at a light, when i start to go, i roll back a little and it sounds like the gears grind...the sound scares me, anyone know what this is? i got an '07 limited v8

Hill Assist Control

Its normal.

PS I love your grammar

yes, i understand that its supposed to stop the car from rolling back, but it doesnt do that. it rolls back and when i hit the gas it makes a terrible noise that sounds like its going to break

Seriously google it and what it does and think logically about the sound you hear.

I already told you it's normal.

i get it f****t. but ive had other cars that DONT roll backwards and DONT make a sound that makes the car sound like a piece of ****. The hill assist control isnt assisting with anything except making my car look like a piece of ****

Other cars don't have hill assist control.

Enjoy your time off from this website.

You just sound ignorant now.

well luckily im not a dork and dont blog my whole life. so im not gonna cry if i cant blog about nothing. just wanted to see if anyone had anything helpful to say about this obvious defect, bc it cant be normal for a car to make a terrible sound like that. nobody wants their car to sound like that.

Mine made that same sound one day while I rolled backwards in my driveway with the 4Runner in "D"... sounded to me like the brake system intervening, but it definitely sounded like a whole lot of "click-clack" and beeping going on with little affect. My 2008 Subaru Impreza (5-speed) had Hill Start Assist and would just hold the brakes on for a second or two with no noise at all except for a very faint beep. Worked perfectly every time.

millertime: Everyone here is correct, when you brake (mine happens when braking heavily) and come to a stop, after stopping and releasing the brake pedal, you will here a "thump". It's not a defect. My 2005 does it, my 2000 and 1997 4Runners (Surfs) did the same thing. Before you trash someone on this forum, do some research ............. "sigh"........., never-mind........

I've seen enough of yor posts on here to understand you're a legend in your own mind (read snotty little brat). Millertime was asking a question and didn't need your BS. It's you my friend that need a permanent vacation from this forum.

Show me where I've been "bratty" to others and I'll GIVE AWAY my 4R. We can raffle it off to others in the forum.
