ticking 1995 4Runner

I have a 1995 4Runner that ticks like crazy. Some say to put a higher octane fuel in it, that will make it quieter. Some say use a thicker oil in it, that will make it quieter. I've tried the fuel option, but not seen a huge dif. I took it into my mechanic. He says he thinks the flywheel is either loose and needs to be tightened ( $40 job ) or it's cracked and needs replacing ( $900 job ) Does this sound familiar ? Legit ? Any suggestions ?
is it possible that a transmission flush could stop the noise ?

my 93 had the ticking noise going untill i got the transmission kit. (flush fluids, new filter and new fluids.) now its not near as bad and only does it a little when its cold.
