Ticking noise part throttle

I picked up an 08 sport with the V8. Love it so far however, part (1/2-2/3rds throttle) I notice a ticking sound that sounds similar to an exhaust leak. I had the place that I bought it look it over for manifold leaks and or exhaust leaks. They stated there were no leaks and that it is considered the "Toyota tick" <-Wtf? The truck has spent no time in the rust belt and has 16K on it. I had driven a few V8 4runners before I found this one, and I dont remember hearing the noise on the others (could be that I just didnt spend enough time in them). It is most prevalent when up next to a wall say in a drive through etc. The engine is butter smooth, runs and drives fine. Anyone else notice a sound like this and diagnose it? If it is normal, I can get over the sound (its not terrible, I am just a perfectionist).

Thanks

I personally haven't experience any ticks. but in my experience if you have ticking sounds coming from the engine its typically valves ticking, this can caused my one of two things A.) the trucks in need of a valve adjustment (somewhat painless) or B.) the timing belt is worn and is causing the timing to be off just a hair. with only 16k on the truck i couldnt imagine it being a timing belt there usually good for 100,000 or 7 years. and unfortunantly the only way to know if your valves need ajustment is to pull the valve covers and use a filler gauge to tollerance the gap between the lifter, rockerarm, valve spring. valve adjustments are appart of the regular maintainence schedule of these trucks but it seems weird to deal with it at 16,000 maybe its just after break in an needs it.

Good idea with the valve adjustment. It almost sounds like a slapping noise until the rpm gets up above 3800 or so then the exhaust note gets nice and throaty and it clears up and sounds great. Maybe Ill take a video this weekend and see if anyone else has heard the same thing.

I had the "tick" which turned out to be the right side exhaust manifold leaking. I could only hear the tick when in gear in a garage or next to a wall. At first I thought it was just the normal tick but it got worse as time went on. I finally had the manifold replaced at around 2 grand.

I've read here somewhere, there is a valve mount that needs to be isolated from
the engine. Search this site for details.

tick

Wow I've been trying to get answers on this for awhile ! Same thing only noticed mine after muffler & resonator mod. Window down against wall & mostly when I'm accelerating hard then it really is noticeable .

Yep that is when I hear it too. I can hear it slightly when I am in park but it is more pronounced in gear. I guess Ill have to take a closer look to see if I can find a manifold leak. If it is a cracked manifold I believe that it is covered under the powertrain 60K. Ill keep you guys posted regarding the result.

Jeepwinch,

Did you find the problem? I have a 2008 V8 sport with 25k miles on it. I bought end of February with14k miles on it.

Anyways I have a tick sound only when I first start the engine in the morning and put in gear before letting the engine idle for a minute or two. When it's been running or warm it does not make the noise.

Assuming maybe manifold leak?

willing to wager it is a cracked manifold. very common on the 4.7 and no aftermarket replacement due to varying designs on different years of the runner. headers are complicated due to the 90 degree block and lack of room next to the frame rails.

I'm no expert but that sounds to me more like some valve noise due to lack of oil circulation to the top side of the engine until a minute or two after startup. I wouldn't think it's cause for concern.

If it were an exhaust leak I'd think it would persist even after the engine had warmed.

No not yet. I've dug in and around the manifolds and can't pinpoint it. Next step is to use my scope and eliminate things one at a time.

Not always because it might be leaking thru a crack when the metal is "cold". Then as it heats up with the engine, the metal expands, closing the crack and stopping the leak. Thats how mine was last year but now the crack as gotten worst so it always leaks.

Agreed. That's how mine was until the cracks got worse and I could hear it all the time.

I get a one-time "tick", maybe even more like a "CLICK!" when i first put the truck in DRIVE and it moves forward between 1-10 feet. I feel it in the gas pedal and a little in the steering column. No CLUE as to what it is.

That sounds like brake pads moving in their mounts as you change direction. Does this happen when you lightly apply the brakes after having changed directions?

Nope, def not the brakes. I paid extra-careful attention this morning,...backed out in reverse, no click. I put it in drive, and i swear, it sounds like a relay clicking behind the dash.

CV's? something in your driveline from this description is worn and/or out of balance, however, your second description is a little different...

Not sure if you have power seats or not, but I've read elsewhere on here that a few guys had a tick they thought was comming from under the dash, and found out it was actually a relay under the seats. I think the lumbar control was the more common one there.

As for the exhuast click/tick, it usually starts at the gasket, and gets worse from there leading to a cracked manifold. If you can catch it early enough you only need to change the gasket. When a shop changes your manifold, they change the gasket aswell not telling that you it started with the gasket.

This is probably the VSC initializing itself once you drive a few MPH. It fires up all the actuator motors and control relays, and it probably pressurizes itself as well, as a form of a self check. Completely normal.
