as im in the middle of swapping out my axles, I will be swapping out my outer tie rods aswell.

Does any one know off hand what size wrench the jam nut and the other end of the tie rod is.

Biggest open ended I have is a 24mm and its to small.

If anyone can help me out that would be great.

Im assuming its metric , right ?

Well I got one side off with a pipe wrench , other side isn't budging ... Going to try heating it but I'm nervous and I'm not sure what I'm going to do if that doesn't work.

Damm new england weather has turned this truck into a pile of rust...

Got an adjustable wrench? That should be all you need. Well, you'll need a med-large size one, not the dinky pocket-size.

x2. I don't remember exactly what size it is because we used a mega-sized adjustable wrench.

Ya the jaws and my 12" adjustable were just spreading and it was stripping the nut. But the nut wasn't budging. I need to buy like. 24"

Don't buy an adjustable wrench, buy the right size wrenches. The lock nut on the outer tie rod is 27mm and the inner tie rod is 28mm.

Get you some craftsman wrenches.

Lucky I can put the project off since I have another car. But it still sucks.

Bummer!

And there's nothing wrong with using a high quality adjustable wrench. The cheap ones are junk, and the jaws will open slightly when torqued.

That broken piece is the LBJ right? So now you just need to replace the LBJ too? Sucks it broke, but if it broke, then you probably needed to replace it anyway. Better now than driving down the highway.

I already am replacing both lower ball joints as part of the project . Thats one of the bolts that holds it in place , thing snapped right off . I should be able to drill it plus about 1/4 is sticking out at the bottom so that will help aswell.

Curious if this works. Those bolts are probably hardened, and may be very difficult to drill without a high quality drill bit.

Those bolts are soft. That is why they break often.

If the bolts won't move, the best method is to use heat (oxy acetylene torch) and they will come right out.

Shocking it with a hammer might help.

Use a antiseize when reinstalling and you might not have the problem in the future.
