Time for a wager

Some guy in ratty jeans and a hoodie rang my doorbell, and I made the mistake of answering. Nice kid, launched right into his spiel about Eco Orange, the miracle cleaner. I decided to entertain him. He spent about 20 minutes trying to sell me on this stuff, and the whole time I was just trying to read if he was going to pull a gun on me(pessimism?) I ended up buying a quart of the stuff for $50. To be fair he did genuinely seem to be a personable kid just working a shit job.

So in the interest of social experimentation, what odds would you give the following outcomes:

-He was casing my property for a late night break in(really bad decision)
-He is going to forge my check
-He sold me a bullshit product
-He was actually a legit traveling salesman with reputable product

Im going to say, go with your gut,, but from what ya posted, Im gonna say he is legit. I hope anyways.

I called a toss up- I dont own my current residence and had overwatch. Damn my curiosity but there is a fine line between good nature and treachery and I wanted to test it. This isnt the inner city but I recall a recent post i made about the perception of safety...
 
I've made the same mistake before. I have a soft spot for kids trying to better themselves. I ended up stressing about it for a while (at least I paid cash)....but everything turned out fine. Sometimes I wish I was more of an A$$hole.
 
hmm. here's my input on two situations:

They have a lot of pest control/knife kits etc kind of sales conventions at my college. They draw you in with the promise of near six figure income in a summer's work. Then they ship you off to some other state and you pay for everything. Unless you're a brilliant sales person, you make nothing. My friend made $300. It could be one of those deals. Evil, evil places.


My parents answered the door about a year ago. There were two kids that had claimed to be from the nearby high school and were selling 7-11 gift cards for $20 each in support of their basketball team. My step mom asked them who the coach was, and they answered correctly... so she bought one.

It all seemed great until my dad tried to buy a hot dog. The guy at the counter said the gift card was never activated and was likely stolen. NICE. My step mom was not going to let it go either.

A few days later, my parents decided to stop off at the school since there was a basketball game going on and she personally knew the coach. Immediately she recognized one of the kids that sold her the gift card just watching the game in the bleachers! She tried to talk to him and he just told her that "it wasn't me, but I heard of someone doing that..." what exactly, she never mentioned to him. The idiot also gave her his name! When she talked to the coach, he verified that's who it was.

I guess the next day they had an officer come talk to him and see what other houses they had taken advantage of. My step mom still wasn't done though. She didn't ask to press charges, but wanted both kids to apologize to the whole basketball team in person, and she also wanted to talk to the parents.

It really was quite the interesting story. Too bad she couldn't tell you herself, my version sucks.

My first ponderance is, what are you guys doing on here at 4am? Of course, I am too, and have no valid reason at all. But yeah, $50 for a quart seemed a bit steep, but its a 1oz per 16oz water concentrate, so its got some legs. From what I saw, it cleaned a perfectly round spot in a section of carpet, made tile grout change color from dirt back to grey, degreased my stove top, and then the kid scrawled all over a rag with permanent marker and it cut a line right through the marks. I asked the bottle to grab me a Sierra Nevada IPA, but it just stared back at me blankly. Cant say I didnt try.

Mike, those are good points and unfortunately pretty indicative of the times we live in. I didnt realize that traveling salesmen were borderline slave labor. Google says its fairly prevalent, which really sucks. With the teen situation...that really is interesting. High schoolers are different breed. I hear stuff like this and just shake my head. They try to act like they know it all in some really interesting ways, and to a degree they pull it off. When they get caught, the consequences are likely what your step mom did- theyre young and lets give em a break...which Im sure they realize and take advantage of. I never thought I would prefer that someone would just go steal from wal mart and stop preying on individuals.
 
This is funny to me. The last guy who knocked on my door, was selling magazines. My expression and tone must have got the point across, the first thing he asked me was if I liked to read when I wasnt bench pressing Buicks, hahaha...funny. I might be a large guy so I get it but I have no sense of humor when people wander onto my property. I did not open the storm door , and I had my 38 in my pocket.(I dont trust people) He got the picture and asked if I knew any NICE people that read around the neigborhood. I shut the door and locked it 3 times. I hate it when people come to my house, I feel the same as OP, culd be a case job, or a psycho. Most likley a scam, MAYBE a kid working a shit job.
 
I'm up at 4am because I haven't fallen asleep yet. now it's almost 7am.

that's the worst though. The kids selling pest control pretty much went to wealthy neighborhoods anyway. The Cutco knives (I think) target everyone. They just about harass both the buyers and the salesmen.

I had one guy walk into the shop once and demonstrate his citrus cleaner. I said "you're welcome to demonstrate whatever it is you'd like, but the owner makes all of the purchases and he's out right now."

He left, and my boss came out of hiding. lol
 
I have a No Soliciting sign on my door. On the rare occasion that somebody knocks anyway, I politely point to the sign and tell them I'm not interested. I make it a point not to be rude, because I'm not interested in having my house or my vehicles vandalized by a disgruntled itinerant salesman.
 
Not interested in having my home or vehicles vandalized by a disgruntled college boy either. I'd better not see you hanging around with a bucket of pink plastidip or there's gonna be trouble. :mad:
 
I usually don't answer the door, but if I do, my more... uh... vocal dog is by my legs going nuts and I only open it a few inches, with one foot behind it to stop push-ins.

If they jump into their spiel I tell them not interested. If they continue I close the door. I had one fool knock again so I opened the door a little wider this time so the dog's head popped out. She's a great dog but man she can scare the crap out of people... lol

And yes I typically carry when I go to the door.
 
2 eighty pound german shepherds are a great deterrent. Ive tried to steal my parents dogs once or twice, but they always seem to notice

I have 2, NO SOLICITING signs now. My neighbors know that if their kid is selling some, to come one over, Im buying, lol

Lol. That's exactly what happens at my place. My dog is one of the goofiest and sweetest dogs on the planet, but if you knock on the door or ring the doorbell, he goes apesh*t. I usually crack the door enough to say, "I can't hold him back for long" and they bolt.

He also hates vacuum cleaners and for whatever reason, the Nextel beep.

Oh man, same here. This dog goes bonkers for the vacuum. We used to have one of those Roomba vacuums and she figured out how to turn it on to play with it. It got a little annoying though because it kept dying in random places in the house. I was considering getting one of the newer versions that is smart enough to return to the charging station when it gets low.
 
I love when people come to my door. My Boston Terrier is a total nut case. He got a thing for bitting through people's shoes and making there toe bleed if he doesn't like you. I never know who hes going to do it to so i'm always on guard. Thankfully no one has sued me yet
