Time for new tires, please recommend

Hi there,

I need 4 new tires for my 04 4Runner. Tire size is 265/65/R17. I don't like the stock Dunlop Grand Trek. The truck is driven on local road in town most of the time, about once per month on unpaved road to some rock climbing sites, and once or twice off road per year for site seeing. I would like to find tires that have good balance in on road and off road performance, reasonablely fuel efficient and long tread life. Living in south cal, snow and ice performance aren't that important. Chains are requires to drive in snow anyways.

Given my use case, can someone please recommend some tires?

I just called Costco, they only have four models in my size,
Michelin - Cross Terrain® SUV, $225
BFGoodrich - Long Trail T/A® Tour, $152
BFGoodrich - Radial Long Trail T/A®, $137
BFGoodrich - Rugged Trail T/A®, $162

Judging from the tread pattern, I think they are listed in order of increased off road performance. I am considering BFGoodrich - Long Trail T/A® Tour. Any experience with these tires? Are they any good on unpaved road or off road?

The previous generation Long Trail was no prize... The current one is supposed to be pretty good. A buddy of mine has about 20k on a set (1500 series Chevy) and they seem great. They're quiet, work well in the rain etc. For light dirt roading he has no issues when on his South GA. farm. I would tell you NO to the Ragged Trail. I have yet to hear much good about them. I ditched them on my '05 Titan at 15k for some Revo‘s which I loved.

ClemsomFans suggestions are perennial favs and hard to fault.

I would want to be out of the chain up business if I were you and might emphasize that bit more. That's why I suggested the GYSA. Another cool snowflake embossed tire is the Pirelli. One or two folks here had them and seemed very satisfied. The downside is they only come in 265/65/17 so no upsizing option is available. Read the reviews on TireRack, they night be on my short list in your situation.

i put yoko geo g053 on my 05 and never looked back
but good for only 50k, the first 30k was excellent bad weather was never a problem
 
I saw good reviews of Michelin LTX AT2 and BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO on tirerack. The problem is that Costco doesn't carry them. They can be ordered from Sam's club. However, Sam's doesn't sale road hazard warranty, which I think is a really good insurance for new tires.

Chris, I researched both GYSA and Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow. These are great all around tires. GYSA looks so cool and rugged.

I was in a bit of rush today since I discovered the front right tire slowly leaks air and I can't find wheel lock key to put the spare tire on...

This is a good opportunity to get the tires I really want (better off road performance than the stock Dunlops).

I also realized the convenience of good snow performance. I go ski many times, plus a few hiking/mountaineering trips in the East Sierras during the winter. I would gladly ditch these chains.

So here is my quick list,
GYSA, ($199+$24 road hazard +installation) x4 + $100 shipping (tirerack)
Pirelli Scorpion Ice & Snow, ($164+20+installation) x 4 + shipping (tirerack)
Michelin LTX A/T 2, ($193+24+installation) x4 + shipping (tirerack)
BFGoodrich - Long Trail T/A® Tour, $171 x 4 installed (costco)

You can see that I still keep Long Trail Tour in the list. $171 per tire including installation, road hazard warranty and life time balance and rotation is hard to skip.

Does anybody know a good price for these tires online or in San Gabriel Valley? If I can just find a good deal on the first two tires to ease the pain...

Just a suggestion, I wouldn't necessarily shop tire rack, they are decent but discounttiredirect.com has some great prices and they price match as well and there are a ton of other websites for tires cheaper. Just my 2 cents.

^Right on. If you have a Discount Tire in your area I would check them out. They should match their prices on discounttiredirect.com too.
 
I'd watch the local paper for Goodyear ads... I would think you could do the GYSA's for similar money to the BFG's
