Time to buy, need help

As a follow up to my request for color help, I've decided to go with the mag gray. I had my local dealer find one that is 3.5 hours away that has the following specs:

SR5 4x4
3 row leather
backup camera
convenience package (moonroof, etc.)
running boards
exhaust tip (not something I wanted but it's on there)

MSRP is $39,075 approximate

Now, what should I expect to pay? I did my usual research through Consumer Reports to find out hold back, etc. The problem is this one is at another dealer so my dealer won't be getting the hold back. Therefore, my original hopeful deal of $35,100 (invoice minus holdback) has now become a hopeful of $35,750. This is my hopeful deal, is this realistic?

I don't think invoice is realistic right now. The closest I could get was 800 over invoice. I was betting on getting 500 over, so I took it. I did't want to walk over 300 bucks. I'm still kicking myself in the ass for not looking at more models, and for not getting 4 wheel drive. I guess that's what happens when you try to save money. LOL

From what I understand (and it's been mentioned to death on the forums) production is slow with the recent disasters in Japan. So I don't think dealers will be coming off of the price much since supply isn't what it used to be.

Assuming you had the same options (3rd row, leather, roof, running boards, power seats, back up cam) I wanted, invoice is a bit over $36K. I ended up going used, because I couldn't swallow the depreciation.

I don't think the $35,750 is that bad considered the options you got on there. the 3rd row leather and 4X4 makes it more expensive, plus the running boards and convenience package. I dont think 32 to 34 is realistic like one poster said. And now with the japan situation. Clearly if you could get it cheaper the better, but, i wouldn't walk away because of $500 bucks over the course of having it for 10 years

good luck

I paid about $36K for a mag. gray TE. So your price seems kind of high for an SR5. Target price should be around $32-$34K.

There is no way they are going to sell me or anyone else that vehicle for $32k to $34k with al those options I don't think. The cost of the vehicle to them is a minimum of $35k.

I ended up at about 1K over invoice for a LE. It killed me because I've never paid more than $200 over invoice in my life, and I usually pay under invoice.

My two cents worth, in no particular order -
Make sure you get the vehicle you really want. You'll see many threads here about "I wish I got 4wd" "How do I add a third row?" "How do I remove third row?" etc. Get the exact color and options you want, or you will regret it every time you look at your truck.

Be patient if you can. Time is your friend in getting the price and options you want. Sadly, the transmission in my old Ford Explorer was shot, so I couldn't wait any longer.

Don't get locked into one dealer. Shop around. I live in Houston and couldn't find the vehicle I wanted largely because Gulf States Toyota orders very few 4wd vehicles. Getting 4wd with the other options I wanted, in Texas, was nearly impossible. I bought my 4R from a dealer in Kansas. It costs $500 to ship the truck from Kansas to Houston.

If the options you want are somewhat rare and desirable, the dealers will not negotiate as much on the price. They know that somebody else will buy the same truck next week. It's business, they will sell to the highest profit-margin customer.

Good luck!

The 3rd row seat is actually part of the price in the links, which gives a good baseline to the prices you are quoting.

But then I live in the DC/Bmore area where finding a good deal and Toyota inventories aren't too bad. I remember my sticker price last year was around $39K, and I walked out below invoice.

But you can definitely get the truck for $35.1K, which is about 90% of the MSRP of $39K, if you negotiate well. 91% of the MSRP is $35.6K, which is the price you are hoping to pay. Stick to a fixed percentage of the MSRP you want to pay and use that as the negotiating point. Anything above 93% of MSRP seems too much IMO for what you want.

I've got a black SR5 4x4
PREMIUM PACKAGE with 3 row leather,
NO backup camera
convenience package (moonroof, etc.)
running boards
NO exhaust tip
Carpet Floor Mat & Cargo Mat

for $34,800. MSRP was $37,854. It was in April 2011.

I was in a similar situation like you are where local dealer wanted to deliver a vehicle from another dealer. I did not pull a trigger on that deal because vehicle will be driven on a road by someone from a dealership and there might some issues afterworlds (e.g. stone chips, etc). So I decided to take 3hrs drive to Ohio and pickup a vehicle by myself. And I like I did. Dealership in OH had 3 vehicles on a lot to choose from (2 black and 1 BP ;) and all of them matched my configuration. I picked up one with 2 miles on the odometer and skipped a dealer-traded one with 200 miles.

volrus7, what state are you in?

I'd have to agree.

I still think I got screwed sometimes. Not that it's their fault. I should know better.

I hate myself because I'm usually very good with my money. For some reason, I saw the T4R and went stupid. By the time I walked out I had a new car. LOL

Mine is a stock SR5, 4X2. I wanted the 4x4, but would never really use it so I didn't see the need to spend the extra cash.
I do have the leather upgrade with power seats. That's about it, other than matts, exhaust tip, and tint. All were on the truck already.

MSRP was 34,800 or something close. I paid 32,500, which was 800 over invoice. Well, at least what they showed to be invoice. Who knows where those numbers actually come from.

I'm in Tennessee. I'm actually hoping to go pick up the vehicle myself if they will let me. I don't want them driving it that far (even though it's all Interstatee) and I don't want them washing it. I'm hoping the dealer can send their guy over there to pay the other dealer the money for the 4runner and then I can actually pick it up and drive it home. I'm going to within about an hours drive from there this weekend for another reason so that could possibly work.

To answer your original question, your hopeful deal $35,750 is realistic. Make sure you get a decent financing in case you need it.
Not sure how you are going to do paperwork... you do not want to sign anything until you see a vehicle, so probably you have to pickup it up with a representative from your local dealership, drive to your local dealership and do all the paperwork there.

I just purchased a mag. Gray 4x4 in Texas this week, MSRP $34,565, for $30,877 + TTL and $120 Doc. fee. It had the following options:
-50 state emissions
-XM radio
-tint
-3M shield
-Paint Sealant protection
-Cargo Cross Bars
-8-Way Cloth Seat

Good luck in your purchase.

Holy crap that's a good price. Damn, I paid 2k more than you. :jaw drop:

Yeah, I was pretty excited about the deal. I test drove the 4Runner a couple of times and then asked the salesman for the invoice and used that as my negotiating tool. The salesman was a younger guy, so I think he was just eager to get a sale. I bascially let him know I was in no rush to purchase so if he couldn't get the price down then I would not buy. Also, I arranged all my financing beforehand, so it helped to negotiate like it was a cash purchase.

I paid $33800 (33300+500 dealer handling) on 5/5.

4wd SR5, Premium, Convenience, Alarm, auto dimming Mirror, mats, crossbars and running boards. Sticker was $37,648.

I think it was about 1k below invoice. I was working with two dealers who kept making the deal better.
