Time to replace my Duratracs, recommendations?

My Duratracs have been great for the past 40k miles, but the tread is starting to get low so its time to replace them. I have them in a 285-70-17 size on my truck with a 3" lift. I enjoyed the aggressive stance and look, but I don't love the terrible gas mileage and noise. That said, I'd rather have a mean looking tire than great gas mileage, but I'm wondering if there's another tire out there that can do both.

The only off-roading my truck sees is the occasional back road, so off-road performance is not the most important criteria.

Thoughts?

Falken At3w 285 70r 17 p-rated. Aggressive looking, good on/off-road reviews, winter-rated and plenty of tire for the occasional trail use.

My next set will be Nitto Exo Grapplers in a 285/70/18. I was torn between the duratracs and the Exo but the exo has a thicker sidewall from the reading ive done which will help since my truck does see a good amount of off road use

I actually JUST ordered a set of 5 of these!

This is a big deal for me since I have been sporting Duratracs or Destination ATs on my last 4 Toyotas. Fingers crossed that it is everything that it is cracked up to be.

Interested in a review! I had good luck with the first iteration of the Falkens on my 4th gen 4Runner.

Sounds like the guy who wants to go to heaven but doesn’t want to die. You don’t really off road but bought off road tires for the looks despite the fact that off road tires by definition have a harsher ride with reduced MPG which you say you don’t like.

Thoughts? Look through member pictures and get the ones that look mean enough.

I plan on doing a review of the Destination ATs on my Instagram next week. They have been a fantastic tire for the past 55,000 miles, and they still have plenty of tread. I just know they aren't going to get me through the Colorado / New Mexico / North Texas winter, and I don't like waiting to the last minute with tires.

After a few weeks on the AT3Ws, I will be putting a review of those on my Instagram as well.

Both reviews should be short and to the point.

Ridge Grapplers (see Lawndart or Weeeeeee on here). Mean tires but they'll keep you in the "hybrid" category. Almost bought these.
Toyo R/T - only downside to these over the RGs is weight, they're heavy. Check out defconbrix on Instagram, he runs them in a 35 and has had multiple sets of them.
The Falken's everyone in here are mentioning are great, Lightenup_bro runs them and I've seen them tackle some solid stuff first hand.
Cooper Discoverer ST MAXX are solid as well, they run more narrow than some of the other "33s" in this category but a buddy of mine just tackled a pretty wild jeep trail this weekend with his.

If you're looking at making the full jump to M/T world, then you can't go wrong looking at the following:

Toyo M/T (I run these, they're heavy but amazing)
Falken M/T
Cooper STT Pro (Apex Overland and many others run these without issues)
Nitto Trail Grappler
General Grabber x3 (another buddy has these, they run great)

Rocking 285-70-17 P Rated Falken AT3/W here and I have nothing but good things to say. I've had them for 8 months now and they've taken everything I've thrown at them. Quiet on the road, great in wet conditions, and aggressive to the eye and trail. You will not be upset. One thing, don't expect a radical change in your gas mileage because these tires are still heavy SOBs.

Shameless photo dump...

I had almost 78k miles on my duratracs 285/70-17. I just purchased a set of STT pros, same size.
The duratracs did me well, with occasional offroading but mainly road tripping with the family. the only reason I went w/ the coopers this time is because discounttire had a deal at $225 ea. the latter are about 6lbs heavier per tire and my gas mileage took a slight hit. I would've went with the duratracs again if the price difference wasn't $60+ per tire.
Hope this helps.

I've always driven pickups, recently bought a 4Runner TRD off road premium. Most of my off road use has been through pastures at the farm working cows.

I love BFG all terrains, the last set I bought was pre KO2, but I'm going to be getting a set of them soon for the T4R, from everything I've read they're even better than the originals.

I have Toyo AT2s. Good traction. Quiet. Terrible balancing issues since day 1. Never have been balanced well. At 20k miles they're 70% worn and I'm on the fence of replacing now or in the fall. So maybe expect 25k miles or so. They have a 65k mile warranty but they will not honor it for any tire not purchased in store. I bought them online so I'm SOL. They've been reasonably durable with one sharp rock through the center of the tread area. I might consider them again - but only due to price, and I would only buy them in store so I could get them replaced under warranty. They're pretty cheap. And they have really soft rubber - which is great in the rocks.

I bought a separate set of wheels (20's) because I wanted 33" tall street tires. Then I'm going to have a second set on my 17" OEM wheels which will either probably be Cooper ATW or a full on MT tire like a KM2 or IROK ND. Whatever I find on a good sale.

Also FWIW I would not hesitate to buy P rated tires again. An XL rated P tire can be more than adequate for a 4runner. It's nice to see more options coming out. The extra weight of an E rated LT tire is not worth the loss in performance unless you're spending a lot of time in the dirt in areas that have a lot of sharp rocks. Today's P-XL tires are pretty durable.

I've always had KOs and put KO2s on my current 4Runner 6 months ago. Do some digging around here before you buy. Either there is a bad batch of production KO2s or they aren't the same quality they used to be. I have had nothing but trouble keeping them balanced and needing to replace 2 tires so far for defects.

Many people here report no issues, but there are also a lot of us that have had nothing but problems keeping them in balance despite seeking out road force balancing on the Hunter 9700.

I am looking to switch to Nitto or Falken or something else.

Almost any AT tire...

mud/at hybrids are a great idea if you use them, if you don't why get them? I have personally always ran AT tires and I have spent a lot of time off road, the only time I every have had issues, thick clumpy mud (or belly deep) and soft sand when the treads were new, other than that kinda senseless to get anything different.

That said I am mounting a second set of GY MT/R's :hungry: :biggrin1:

Pretty much spot on. I run the Nitto RG's on my 5th gen and the ST Maxx on my 4th gen. Both seem to be really good tires. In my opinion, the ST Maxx is slightly better in the mud but I feel the RG is better on wet/icy roads. So far the RG is quieter than the ST Maxx but I wouldn't say the ST Maxx is loud at all. Both tires balanced pretty good but overall the RG is a little smoother on the road.

One thing to watch with Exo Grapplers is weight. I ran a set in 285/70/17 on my Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited and they were amazing in snow and pretty good overall offroad tires, but they KILL gas mileage for being a hybrid. Probably ran similar gas mileage to a full on mud tire and they actually weight more than some full muds.

Remember, it is a tire targeted to heavy duty trucks. I'm actually running E-load Falken AT3Ws on my 4Runner now and am pretty happy thus far (in stock size, but they run large).

You think they will weigh more than the 305/60/18 terra grapplers im running now? If so by about how much?
