Timing belt change

2000 Limited, and it's that time. Suppose I should do the water pump too? I called the local dealer; $430 for the belt change, $700+ for the water pump, but she said it would be less than that with the combined labor; couldn't give me an actual price, however.

Also called the Lexus dealer; they said "prolly $1000/$1200".

I've got about 91,000 on it; should I be nervous? I just put $1200 in the wife's Acura, so I'd prefer to wait a while.

Any idea what this should set me back? Thanks...

Not exactly sure what it should cost as I haven't done it yet on the 4Runner. On every car that I have done it, you change the water pump, radiatior fluid and all the belts. Since they have to take off the belts, they might as well replace those.

As far as wanting to wait becuase of the cost, I have waited awhile. I have read many member going well past the 90,000 miles and more importantly, the engine is considered a non-interference engine. I currently have 106,000 miles and I am planning on going to around 120,000 miles.

Wow! Looks like I better move to Denver or St. Paul! Thanks for the input and the other thread, Peter.

I paid $1600 for:

timing belt
water pump
drive belts
engine seals
transmission drain and fill
new plugs and wires

the cheapest i was getting quoted was about $900 for just the timing belt and water pump. i also live in northern virginia to give you an idea.

my runner had 174,000 miles on the original t belt. i had it changed once i got her home (bought it used).

had the t belt, t belt tensioner, drive belts, waterpump and thermostat done for 684. at a local shop. if you have a local shop do the t belt make sure you stress to them that the crank pulley bolt really really needs to be torqued on there. i believe its 217 ft-lbs.

it the crank pulley isn't properly torqued on there bad things happen.

I recently had done

T-belt and water pump w/radiator service of course
new belts
engine seals

and the dealer got me for $860 out the door.

I had Aamco do my tranny and all my gearboxes for about $200.

My 98 limited is at the Toyota Dealership as we speak getting the timing belt and water pump done. My grand total is $497 which includes parts, labor and tax. Plus they gave me an 08 Rav 4 to borrow while mine is in the shop. The Rav 4 is pretty sweet, it can really haul ass for only being a 4cylinder.

That was in S. Minneapolis. My dad's friend is a former airplane mechanic who now owns a garage. He is pretty affordable and owns nothing but Toyota/Lexus himself so I trust him with my 4runner. As for when I'm in denver, I have no idea where to go. Where do you guys in CO take your toyotas for service?

EDIT: I did the timing belt service at 101k, and I guess I was lucky I took it in when I did my water pump was leaking.

The TB interval is duty related to some degree according to some. Going easy on your 'runner apparently allows for longer intervals while roughhousing will take its toll more quickly. An inspection hole/panel would have been a nice idea...

I'm at 184k right now - last TB was at 120k. I'll wait until 200k for the next one with pump and all belts, and make the one after that at 300k most likely. Will use Toyota parts, for sure.

I did mine when I bought it in 07 with 138k on it. I ordered all the OEM toyota parts and delivered it to the dealer to have the work done. This was in 07 and I want to say it was 600+ for parts and 900+ for labor...but we had...
water pump,
all idler wheels,
tensioners,
cam seals,
front main seal
timing belt,
water pump,
and starter (it was acting up at that time)

I'll look for my receipts for the exact numbers

I deliberately waited until 120k to do my first change, but then I did everything that touches the belt except the crank: idlers, WP, and tensioner. Belt still looked good for quite a bit more. going to wait for 240k to do the next one and do the same thing.

I did it myself so I can't help on pricing.

Read the mega-thread on YT. These belts rarely fail unless an idler locks up or coolant leaks on them or the tensioner lets it slip.

My problem in not doing the timing belt for 15 years (only had 105k on the odo) was that the FIPG was on its last leg for the water pump as well as the tensioner was maxed out and the belt had stretched to its limit.

IMHO years matter as much as miles do.

It's really not a hard job either. It could be done in a day if you are mechanically inclined and depending on what all you are changing. I spent 1.5 days doing mine and I changed literally everything, tensioners, TB, WP, thermostat, drive belts, idlers, radiator, crank seal, and flushed the coolant. I also got rained on the second day and had to set up a canopy over the truck to stay somewhat dry... This was my first time doing a TB change as well.

First off, look on ebay. I just paid $240 for oem timing belt, all 3 drive belts, thermostat, valve cover gaskets, cam seals, water pump, tensioner, idlers, associated gaskets, ect.

It's booked as a 3.5-4 hour job. Any shop charging you more then hourly rates x 4 is raping you. My local dealer wanted $380 after tax for just labor but they were supplying coolant as well.

Gotta watch the stupid ass shops. They charge say 2 hours for a timing belt, but you mention drive belts and they stack another hour on. Uh, those come off before the timing belt. They will double and triple charge you for labor if you aren't at least aware of what happens on the job. My dealer at $380 added 30 minutes for the thermostat replacement. You know the one that's in the water pump housing in addition to wp labor. They have no shame and just claim ignorance when you ask wtf?
