Timing Belt Costs

I am coming up on 90,000 miles and am looking at getting my timing belt, water pump, drive belts, cam seals and crank seal replaced. One guy even said there is a timing belt tensioner thhat can be replaced?? Anyone ever heard of that?

I am being quoted at about $950 for it all. Good deal? Bad deal? Do I need all of that done?? What else should I look at with 90,000 miles?

That is about the average price. Have you thought about doing it yourself. I did mine for about $200. If you have the ability and time I would go that route.

definitely don't have the ability but I do have the time. Have you heard of the timing belt tensioner at all?

If you are going to have all of the work done then have the tensioner replaced also. I just cleaned and checked mine and it seemed to be fuctioning properly and is not making any noises. To remove the tensioner you have to loosen or remove an A/C compressor bracket/mount. If you go over to yotatech.com there is a good writeup on replacing the belt with lots of pictures so that you can see what is going on, and the location of the parts.

i've heard of it - but i would think that if it need replacing you'd have a non-running motor at this point.

i was in the opposite boat though: i had the ability, just not the time, so i got my water pump, timing belt, and all three drive belts done at a local shop for ~ $550. the dealer quoted me $640. i also did it when i had 110k on my truck.

for the cam and crank seals, you shouldn't need to replace them unless they're leaking. you don't usually do those until ~200k miles. while the shop has the belt and pump off they can visually look and see if they need to be done though.

i thought i had bookmarked a how-to thread from yotatech on how to replace that stuff yourself, but guess i lost that link when i swapped out my laptop.

I got everything you are getting quoted 950 for done for half of that at a local shop, and thats with all brand new toyota parts. so I think they are trying to shaft you, secondly, shop around and compare prices. and if possible, tell them you found it cheaper somewhere else and see if they would want to price match it. it doesn't hurt to ask.

was it your friends, uncles, cousins, boyfriends shop?? I've checked about 8 places and the cheapest was $850. It could be the area I am in, i don't know.

Buy your water pump from the Dealer. It cost me less than car quest and it is under warranty. If you have any problems with it and even if it is installed somewhere else, Toyota will cover parts and laybor if the pump is the problem. I found this out the hard way.

I could not believe it either. But the dealer said that if the pump is found faulty within 1 year, Toyota will cover labor, even if installed by a third party.

No but maybe it is a tad closer to $600 but definetly not close to what you found.
