Timing belt issue

My 1998 4Runner (6 cyl) has 98K miles and is due for a timing belt replacement, I was wondering how critical this optional procedure is or can it wait a few more thousand miles. I had one replaced on a 1986 Toyota pickup on schedule and the technician reported that it was like new when removed.

Well, I don't think it is considered an optional procedure. Also, the recommended timing belt change for a 98 is 60,000 miles. It is 90,000 miles for my 2001.

The 3.4 V6 is considered a non-interference engine, meaning you won't destroy the engine if it breaks. I lot of members seem to go well past the 60 or 90,000 miles and the belt has not broken. I have decided to go to 120,000 with my vehicle before I change it. I now have 102,000 miles and my Son will probably get it by then. I will change the belt before I give it to him.

Your car is older, but with less miles. I have read of some going over 160,000 miles, but I would think I would change it by 120,000 miles with the understanding that it could break at anytime and you will be pretty much stuck. If you are on a vacation, that would pretty much suck, big time. Planning for a belt change could be cheaper than an unexpected belt change.

Thanks for the info/opinions, I think I can wait a little longer (110K-120K) to change the timing belt however I do have a great estimate at less than $250 here in Georgia. That seems cheap compared to some other locations I have read about in this forum at $600 to $1100.

If $250 is just for labor, that is still cheap. When you change the belt, it is recommended to change the water pump and while you have all the belts off, replace those. When you change the water pump the radiator fluid gets drained, so there goes another expense. If it is still under $500 for all that, I wouldn't wait, you need to get it done and then give me the name of the mechanic.
