So I found this timing belt kit on rockauto.com and I dont have any experience with buying a timing belt kit. Do all these parts sound correct and are good brand parts for the kit?

I got my 4runner with around 90,000 miles, my dad worked for a Toyota dealer and got a good deal on a trade in. He had the water pump and timing belt replaced at the time with an aftermarket one. At 140,000 miles the water pump failed and I had to replace it. For that reason I replaced with an oem one because they should last more than 50,000 miles so for myself I wouldnt ever buy an aftermarket one. But alot of guys on here do buy aftermarket kits from eBay and probably don't have any problems.

Aisin makes the Toyota factory water pump and everything indicates the aftermarket Aisin pump is identical to the one in the red box. Ditto for NSK, Koyo, Mitsuboshi, Bando and Kuzeh, the other suppliers aircabinman uses. There is a world of difference between Aisin and Kabuki (see this thread.)

I just posted a similar comment in fightman's thread.

GO WITH OEM / TOYOTA!

I made the mistake of using a non-Toyota part and my water pump failed a 50k. Sure the aftermarket part may have a lifetime warranty but that is meaningless because they MOST of the time vehicles change cities and mechanics every few years.

If the manufactor once created the part for Toyota then it is probably good as OEM. Example, Koyo radiator.
 
So whats the verdict on the ebay kit?

I was looking at a similar kit on autopartsway and it is well over 400 and doesn't include the thermostat or the acc's belts. It is still an Aisin water pump either way.

It must be closer to 600 if you price all these parts out at toyota. I've never bought engine parts off ebay so it makes me a bit nervous.
 
does the manual say you need to do the tensioner? I dont think mine has ever been done but I didnt do the job.

I believe all you need is the belt, pump, t-stat (every time, Toyota) and misc.

Buy the parts from a dealer in TX, they are much cheaper.

I doubt theparts are $600, probably more like $450, someone check on this.
 
Well I'm also located in Ontario Canada, everything is more expensive in canada especially the dealer.

Is it critical to change the idler and tension rollers? There is a kit for around 200 that is just the pump and timing belt. I could then get a t stat from toyota. The ebay kit looks like great value though.

If you get: WP=Aisin, TB=Mitsuboshi, Tensioner idler=Koyo,Idler=NSK,Acc.Belts=Bando,Thermostat=Kuzeh, then that is all OEM and you are fine. Everything I took out was identical to what I put in down to the engraved numbers except the WP was upgraded to the new style Aisin with gasket. Hydraulic tensioners are only made by Toyota, so get it somewhere cheaper than the dealer. I got mine from PartsGeek and it even came in a red box.

If e-Bay makes you nervous--and I admit you don't always get what is promised--you can still save a bundle buying OES at Rockauto or PartsGeek; I've had good results from both.

That WP is identical to the dealer except for the red box. It IS OEM. I completely disgree...except that all WP's will fail, eventually. As to the rest of the kit, OEM idler is NSK, not Koyo, although Koyo is a reputable supplier and did make the tension idler. The Mitsuboshi TB belt is also identical.
 
Well thats what I was thinking. I called a couple local part suppliers and most of the water pumps were Aisin, so was the wp off autopartway. The only part of the ebay kit that didn't seem like an oem supplier was the t-stat, and even that I'm not sure of. I'm going to try this ebay kit. I'm doing the work myself so for the money I'm saving I'll take the risk. If it does go bad I'll bite the build and buy a new water pump through toyota.

As far as what to change, there are lots of opinions. I chose to wait until 120K, and then I changed everything that touched the belt as I didn't want to go back in until 240K. Tensioner, both idlers, WP and belt. If I had done it at 90K, I think I could have waited to do the idlers and tensioner with the idea I would do them at 180K. Everything I took out at 120K was in great shape and looked like it could go quite a bit longer. But there is a big difference between 180K and 240K. If you don't know the age of your parts, and you are over 120K, I would do it all.
 
Yea I agree. I plan to do it all. I just bought my truck a couple weeks ago. I did the rear axle seals and new bearings brakes already. The original owner had the belt and wp done before but I'm not sure if they idlers/tensioners were done at that point or not.

I am pretty sure every single part including the Tstat is OEM Toyota parts from the "Aircabinman" Ebay kit.
I just looked at all my parts I got from him and they are all OEM, a couple of the parts like the Tensioners are direct "Toyota" parts in a Toyota box.
The WP is the same Aisin pump you would get from the dealer.

For $288 no tax and free shipping there is no way you are going to beat that deal anywhere and it is at your doorstep in a couple of days.

Is there a tutorial on how to perform this any where? if not could you take some pictures step by step?

I know it is a lot to ask but i would love to be able to do this my self.
