timing belt labor

Hi,

time to change the original timing belt at 200K, in my 1998 V6.

Called my local Toyota dealer in NJ, labor is quoted at $1000(and the timing belt at $295 in parts, just the belt!). strictly just timing belt, nothing additional. Not even water pump included in that price.

Called the Toyota dealer in MA, where I used to live, and my family still lives, so I visit them frequently. The Labor is $259.(and the belt at $95 if I buy it from them.) Also just timing belt, and $120 extra labor if I supply my own waterpump. And everything that comes off during this process, belts/pullyes/tensioners, I can supply new and they will put it on at no additional charge. ( I bought the kit with like 15 different parts for this job for $260 off the Ebay. includes tensioners, pulleys, belts, thermostate etc.)

Why is my local Toyota dealer charges almost 4 times the dealer in MA?

Are you guys seeing this across the country also?

for those who gets this job done at the dealer, post/respond with what you paid?

for me, I think I will be visting the dealer in MA. with the $1000 labor in mind, I was preparing to do it my self. But at $260 or even $380 with waterpump, I think I let the dealer do it! since I lack tools to get the harmonic balancer out etc.

^^ When it comes to the $tealerships service & $$ ... buyer-B-ware.
Probably why I only get work done, at my friends garage...honest work and labor hours not padded.

Thanks. Got something similar, but with extra components and with Toyota branded belt! I know Mistuboshi is similar or better. got it from Ebay. to get rid of any suspecian of fake parts, I took all of them to a Toyota dealer and they confirm they are original and correct parts. like Koyo and NKS etc.

I have never heard of Amazon service that can come to my home and replace my timing belt! gotta look into it.

I have the quote in writing, if it comes down to it. I was in disbelief after speaking with the NJ dealer, so that I aksed in writing from the MA dealer.

I can't explain or understand the differences in the prices, within the same country. I wouldn't expect to compare what a toyota dealer would charge in Brazil vs in US, but this much variation within North East! wow!

further more, I think there is also so much variation in quality, I have visited some dealerships that just scare the fu*k out of me, with the knowledge and skills of the staff. Their answers were all over the place for some basic questions!

Yes, close to the mall. I only spoke to her on the phone, so don't know if she is based out of there or the Orleans. But most likely there.

Old Toyota is not like today's Toyota.
- Kaizen quality costs money and some of the Toyota feeder plants play lip service to Continuous Improvement.
- My friend is a certified Black belt in quality, and some of their parts lines running with 20% rejects...and no corrective action taken
- sign of the almighty $$ speaking & poor management

Service Advisers on bonus up-sell plans / while good mechanics getting shafted on flat rate pay and Toyota warranty half rate hours.
- its a largely big jungle of unhappy working staff and maintaining skilled trades, that are leaving the field or retiring
- millions spend on the building & prime location, for the Sales staff magic...while the dealership profit is largely governed by the Service Dept.
- new blue collar generation, don't want to make sh*t wages and be expected to have $100,000 in Snap-On tools

^^ Exactly why honest private operator/owner smaller garages, are often the best choice...its all I support.

Base timing belt change started at 399. Then after I said I want the water pump, pulleys, seals, and accessory belts changed also the price jumped up to
1197.00 for everything. Still not that bad for work from the dealer, I guess. At least every thing would be factory yota parts.

Just from reading on this forum, the price variances on the same job from dealer to dealer are pretty wild.

Also glad to see that you have gone 200k on the original belt without any trouble - I'm at 208,000 now on the vehicle and the timing belt was replaced @96k. Looks like I can wait on that for awhile!

Per our earlier conversation following is timing belt quote.

If we were putting in Toyota parts, the price for timing belt replacement for a 1998 6 cylinder 4Runner would be $349 parts and labor plus tax. Replacing the drive belt would be approximately additional $100, no labor.

With you supplying parts, it would be labor only at $259. There would be no warranty on the parts.

You had mentioned that you had purchased a kit and we discussed that when using it, there would be no additional labor charges to use the parts you supply to replace parts that would normally be removed as part of the timing belt replacement. If there happens to be something that you supply us not normally removed, you would be given a quote for extra time which may be needed.

Please call to set an appointment and this would be a drop for the day appointment.

Have not gotten the work done yet.

I was passing by the dealer here in Joplin and wanted to get a price for the timing belt job. My truck is around 186K miles with one belt change at 96K miles. I might just let them do it and reply when the work gets finished.

After reading the great "how to" thread by another forum member, it doesn't seem that hard. But I am missing a couple of tools and assistance from a real life person if I run into a major hurdle. For example: Like a broken bolt, I have already had that problem with my original brakes. That was a major pain.

That's a fair amount of money for the work. Still its cheaper for me to work at my job and pay them to do it correctly in one day. The dealer would even loan me a car to drive around in free while they are fixing my ride. Then I have free time to go play on my time off.
