Timing belt maitenance

I called my local toyota dealership to check if my 2001's timing belt and water pump has been changed by the previous owner and unfortunately it hasn't.

I am currently at 146K miles and I know I need to get this done. I have a 2001 V6 4wd

Toyota quoted me $1,050 and a local shop I go to quoted $700.

Not sure if these prices seem right just would like to hear what you guys have to say.

I also was wondering if anyone in the Local Bay Area can do this kind of maintenance as well.

ebay kit is about 300 comes with everything then labor lets say $75-90 a hr and lets say it takes 5hr or so

That sounds like about what the dealers get. I think an experienced Toyota tech could do it in 2 hours. I did mine in 3 1/2 without the special tools (I fought the crank bolt forever). I did the one in my 95 in 2 hours the first time. I'd look for the local 'Toy Shop' - guys who used to work for Toyota dealers who decided to start their own shop. They are generally a lot less than the dealership.

I assume you mean changing everything not JUST the timing belt.
The kit from Ebay is $288, average cost for a mechanic to do it is about $250.

Should not really cost more than $600 at the most for everything.
Timing belt plus ALL other belts, water pump, thermostat, crank seals, tensioners etc.

$1000 is WAY over priced.

I am finally doing mine next week, been buying all the parts and now just need to pay for the labor next week and I am set.

What was in the kit for $200? The best kit I've seen is the Aircabinman kit on eBay for $288.
