Timing belt on 07 4runner ltd v8

Hi all, First off, sorry to have to ask this again, I am sure it been asked many times!
I just upgraded my T4R from 03 with 175k miles to a 07 ltd v8. It's got 120k miles on it and wondering how I can tell if the timing belt has been changed. Its a one owner and I called the dealer the truck was originally bought from and they don't have any record since 70k miles. I asked the dealer I bought it from to contact the previous owner and ask. But without the sticker on the engine, is there a way to tell if the belt has been replaced?

Pop the hood, if it's been changed there will be a very visible sticker or notation with the date and mileage at time of replacement if it's been changed.

Timing belt replacement

Just had mine done at the dealer, $877 with water pump and LOF. No sticker but if you register on the Toyota owners site, it will show all service done at any Toyota dealer. Mine showed up the next day.

You can remove the timing cover and glance at the belt itself. If the lettering looks aged and rubbed off, chances are it's old. That's about the only way of knowing physically and even that's just a guess.

I have looked and there is no visible sticker. Called the dealer and they said they is no way of know without a sticker unless they open it up.

I registered on the Toyota owners site (www.toyota.com/Owners) and it pulled all the service records (Toyota dealership records) and there is no mention of the timing belt being changed. So now I am thinking about going to do the timing belt change at the local dealer. Price quote I got for that work to be done is $600 for the timing belt. Ouch! :faint:

$600 for everything? Parts: T-Belt, serpentine belt, T-Stat, water pump, coolant, and whatever else I may be forgetting. Then labor all for $600? That's a good deal. When I got mine done I bought the parts from Toyota under my dealer account and had my buddy, a Toyota Tech, do the work. If memory serves it was over $200 at the parts counter and I payed him $250 for labor. I say $600 is a deal.

I should have clarified that. The $600 is only for the timing belt. They said they don't change the water pump until it is leaking. It will be an additional $300 if I want to do that at the same time.

It's my understanding that it's actually the water pump that causes the issue with the T-Belt. My tech told me that when it leaks it slips the belt or causes it to degrade, I can't remember exactly. My recommendation would be to take it elsewhere to get another quote and absolutely do the water pump.

At the end of the day, if you insist on the water pump being replaced, they have to do it. If they continue to refuse, call Toyota or find a new dealer. :yo:

x2 on replacing everything in the timing case. Auto tensioner, idler pulleys, t-belt, water pump and new seals on the water pump. Also a good time to throw in a new thermostat since the water neck will be removed during the replacement process.

all these items have seen the same environmental conditions your t-belt has. putting a new t-belt on all the old components will shorten the life of the new t-belt.

do it once, do it right, sleep good at night!

Thanks for all the input, going to the dealership on Thursday to get final quote with all the items aha2988 mentioned and do the work. I will post pictures and my observations after...stand by.

I have to do the timing belt on mine this summer as well.

I called and asked for a price on the full deal. belts, tensioner, idlers, t-stat. Etc. basically everything you could replace during that job and it came to like $1900+ plus the 72 month service Was another $425 so all in was about $2500

Dealer recommended only doing timing belt, serp belt, water pump and I think that came to $1100 again plus the 72 month maintenance which is about $425 so all in $1600 is my bill this go around.

I was told that the tensioner, pulleys and hoses were good to go until the second timing belt job so not to bother doing them yet.

couple gallons of antifreeze: maybe 60 bucks
Timing belt kit from amazon with all the parts mentioned: 250-400 dollars
a weekend working on your truck knowing it's done right: priceless

of course I know not everyone has these abilities or space to perform the job but it's also an option.

the cam shaft seals and front main seal don't have to be replaced unless there leaking. make sure the dealer isn't throwing that in there it's a 17 hour job on the flat rate book for the cam shaft seals. I was quoted around 1100 for the t-belt, auto tensioner, and idler pulley and water pump replacement back when i needed it done. I couldn't afford that so I did it myself.

Yeah, I'm in an apartment otherwise I would probably do it myself. Can't be very hard especially with haynes and the FSM. one day....

Definitely will be nice if I could have done this work myself and saved some money in labor. I might tackle these types of work myself next time, I know I can handle it, might take me a while but I am sure I can get it done.

I dropped off the truck on Thursday morning and went back to pick it up in the evening. I was originally quoted $1100 for t-belt, water pump, coolant flush, serpentine belt. When everything was done my total bill came to $915. When I dropped of the truck, the service adviser was so arrogant but assured me there will be a very visible sticker on the engine that will indicate that the t-belt was replaced. When I picked up the trucked, the first thing I did was to open the hood and check for the "visible sticker". I looked all over and didn't find the sticker. I took the truck home anyways that night. Next day, Friday morning, I went into my garage to look again, thinking maybe I just didn't look well enough. Still didn't find the sticker but to my surprise, I found a pool of coolant on my nicely painted garage floor. So I called the dealership and took the truck back in. It took them the whole of Friday and Saturday morning to seal the radiator appropriately without any more leaks and also put a sticker in the engine for the t-belt. Ugh, wasn't very happy, but they gave me a loaner and everything is good now. I think I will do this work myself next time.
