Timing belt question

(I posted this in General Discussion, but then thought I may get a better response here)

I replaced the timing belt on my 97 T4R V6 when it hit 61,033 miles. The truck has just rolled over 117,700 miles and the last time I brought it in, my service guy said that the belt is coming close to time for another replacement.

Here is my dilemma. I have a new 06 T4R on order & I will take delivery on it sometime in March. I don't think it is worth it for me pay the parts & labor to replace the timing belt, knowing that I will not recoup that on the sale. However, I worry if the belt will be fine for the next 5,000 miles I will have it.

I am guessing that since the first belt went over 60,000 miles, the second one should go that far as well & I should be good until I sell the truck. And when I sell it, I simply tell the new owner that they may want to get it replaced soon as general maintenance?

What is your opinion?

In the later years of that generation it is recommended at 90,000 but quite a few members go way over 100,000 miles with no problem. Since it is a non-interference engine we are not going to destroy the engine if it blows.

Also, I can tell you from past experience if you do work on your car, it is highly unlikely to get that back selling the car. If it were me I would drive it for another 5,000 miles or more and sell it. In my opinion the new owner will get years of enjoyment and may not even replace the belt.

(I have a Honda and I would not dare risk extending the life on the belt in that car. So my advice is just for the 3rd gen 4Runner and not in general.)

You should be fine. My tacoma is 3k miles over its timing belt replacement.
