got a 99 4r with 96k miles, and when the 4r was idling this morning i heard a ping ping noise under the hood, since the timing belt has never been replaced i was wondering if this could be a sign to replace it or not. i have just heard the pinging noise once but still would rather be safe than sorry. dont know of i can make until the 115k range i had planned on, something tells it is about to go. who knows . time will tell !

its a good idea to do it at the right service interval but, I will assure you your tbelt is not ready to go at your mileage. I have seen tbelts go 200k without breaking. (not recommended) Your noise might be an idler or something of the sort

An idler pulley is a pulley with a bearing that the belt rides on. They will make noise if the bearing starts to go bad

I don't think the pinging is related to the timing belt. As far as I know, the only warning you will get, is when it breaks and you are stuck.
