timing belt question

I just recently purchased a 2000 SR5 2wd 4runner.. Fun truck to drive!

The only problems I have had were the power radio antenna (just replaced with a new mast) and worn rear shocks (replaced this morning - top bolt is a PAIN in the A$$).

I'm concerned about the timing belt now. I know its scheduled to be replaced at 90k but my 4runner only has 48k miles on it. Should I be worried about it being 8 years old now?

How much damage will it do if it breaks while driving?

My guess is that years would matter also, but to answer your second question, the engine is non-interference and it should not get hurt if it breaks. Also, at lot of members go way past 90,000 miles, some over 150,000 miles with the same belt.

I have 107,000 miles now on my 2001. So my advice is I would go longer, maybe 10 - 12 years or 90,000 miles on your rig. Now I have a question, how did you find a 2000 with only 48,000 miles?

It was the mother-in-laws car. It's been garage kept for the last 8 years and used to run errands, etc.
