Timing Belt Quotes

Hey, first time poster on this site and I hope to get some guidance from other 4runner owners! well my wife and I are getting close to our 90K timing belt replacement! we own a 2004 SR5 V8 4runner. I currently take both are toyotas to an toyota independent shop here in durham, nc, well for 6 months at this place and this garage quoted me at 725 for the timing belt and an extra 198 for the water pump if it needs replaced..So today, I called another toyota independent shop in raleigh just to get a quote, and they would charge 390 for the timing belt, 200 for the water pump with a total close to 600 and tax...HUGE price difference! Both garages have high ratings for toyota work and awesome reviews

excuse my lack of knowledge as both of us never had to get this done but is the 725 excessive? or does this sound right?

I did have our drive belt replaced a month ago, it was starting to squeal, so that is out of the way as well for the timing belt replacement.

Yup, the $390 price is right. I priced it here in Canada at the Toyota dealership and it was $415.
 
Make sure both places are using oem Toyota parts. Do not use anything else, this job takes to long to do to use anything less. Change the water pump now, it is behind the timing belt. I did my own belt and water pump and also changed all the radiator hoses, all other small coolant hoses and the thermostat while I was in there. Make sure the belt tensioner is not leaking and that all the idlers feel smooth, if they are worn replace them also if you plan on keeping your 4runner.

the toyota dealer here in texas send coupons to my house, the one i saved is expired, but im pretty sure its for like 260$ parts and labor, some timing belt special. when i get home in 2 days i will scan it in and send it to ya, even though its expired you can use it as a barganing chip.

I can not see how anyone could do the job for $260 including the parts. There is a lot of work involved. Great if it works out though.
 
My local garage quoted me $800 to change my old '94's 3VZ-E timing using aftermarket parts (I've had good experiences with many different aftermarket parts on the old truck so it's okay with me).

Labour, of course, a belt, water pump, hydraulic tensioner (they go bad) and the two idler pulleys plus extra stuff like coolant (the rad comes out to change the the timing belt).

My old V6 and your V8 are not exactly apples to apples -- I'm not 100 percent positive if the 4.7 has the same pulleys and tensioner but did the high $725 + water pump quote include the new pulleys and tensioner? Check again -- that may explain the difference in quotes.

I think there was a thread on Yotatech where someone changed their own 4.7 timing belt. It'll give you nice, clear pictures of the front of your engine.

THANKS for the tips! makes me think the first shop charging 725 for just the belt is a little high! going to go with the 2nd shop. with OEM parts, will be looking in the 700's total for TB, PUMP and COOLANT
 
The prices you have been quoted are great! I recently had my timing belt and water pump changed for $850. And that was $100 cheaper than my toyota dealer.
 
I just did timing belt, water pump, sperpentine belt, front sway bar bushings, and three skid plate bolt holes redrilled and taped for $979 OTD in a small local shop.

Local dealer here in central PA quoted $1200 for TB and water pump. In my view a quality job with quality parts under $800 is a good deal.

I did mine myself and even if I had more experience there is no way it can be done in 1.5 hours with one person. Even if it was done that fast I would wonder how many bolts were not properly torqued etc.

I guess I am insane then because I paid a little over 1000 for the belt, water pump, installation, pulley, etc.

Should I see a psychologist?
 
How long should the water pump last for a 2005 4runner v8 in North Florida? I did not plan on changing the waterpump at 90,000 miles with the timing belt, but I did plan on changing the water pump at 180,000 with the timing belt

This is what I did. I paid 4 something for timing belt and serp at 90k. I just paid $825 for timing belt, water pump, serp at 180k. Both times by a trusted local mechanic. I felt it was a little high this time, but searching other posts, seems about normal. Dealership would probably have been over $1k.
 
If the water pump seizes the timing belt will fail and your engine is trashed. I just changed mine while I was doing the belt, didn't take much extra time.
