Timing belt replacement crankshaft washer installed backwards.

History recently picked up a 99 5spd sr5 3.4 with 180k previous owner didn't know when timing belt was changed.

During change noticed a lot of shredded timing belt material belt looks fairly new. After getting crankshaft pulley out noticed the washer was installed backwards. Pics tell the story. Shows how important that little washer is.

When I come across washers and such that are side specific, I usually just take a sharpie and put a dot on the side facing out so to minimize any stupidity by yours truly later on.

Power steering pump, valve cover or cam seal leak?

Yea, it's a belt guide. When I got the 96 I was told that it may have had it done recently.

All the problems I had with rusted bolts it is hard to see it being recently. But belt looked new with a lot of old belt shreds under the cover. The 96 had 255,000 miles when purchased.

New belt is on, old belt was missing a good amount hahaha. Now debating if I should replace that belt guide washer thing or just reinstall it the correct way.

Mine (97 limited to replace the wrecked 96) was a trade in at a Honda Dealer. I gots' to wonder......I got it a qt low on oil, and antifreeze (because of a non sealing cap) and no dipstick in the trans........

Most car owners neglect their cars, period. Back in my car repair days. I saw the evidence of that almost daily. I think Toyota's tend to be neglected even more, because they have a reputation for reliability. So as a result of that reputation, in some cases they never get any maintenance at all.

This is especially true of Leased vehicles. I recall a Leased Camry that came in with the complaint of a knocking noise from the engine. It had NEVER had an oil change. It came in with 40k+ miles.

Needless to say the warranty was void, due to the blatant failure to maintain the vehicle.

Amazing how much was worn off the timing belt because of the washer. I just did mine after about 70K. Make sure you replace your camshaft and crankshaft seals, water pump, pulleys, tensioner and everything the belt comes in touch with. It's a bit costly but you really don't want to go back in there again before 90K. It's a PITA to get everything apart and re-installed correctly.

My sharpies, masking tape and plastic baggies came in handy and so did my camera!! Took pics of everything! I almost got spun around with the belt arrows and Left and Right. I'm in aviation and L/R is from the cockpit looking forward.

I've had alot of different cars through the years and I'm shocked how well the 3rd gen 4runner is built (engine/trans/components) besides the rusting. I bought a 5th gen 4runner new in 2012 because of the 4runner name, worst decision ever traded it back in 6months later.

Purchased my first 3rd gen 4runner in the beginning of this year and saw first hand why there is so much love for the 4runner..

I now have 4. A 97 2.7 auto, 96 3.4 5spd, 01 3.4 auto, and recently picked up a 99 3.4 5spd.

I ordered a complete OEM timing belt kit from aircabman off eBay. Changed everything better safe then sorry. Lol

You have four 3rd gens? Wow, having bought all of them in a year. Three more and you will have a different one for each day of the week.

Not a huge fan of the 5th gen myself. My cousin has one and you can tell its geared for soccer mom duty. I am holding out hope though for the TRD pro and the remote possibility a SC shows up for it.
