Hello, all.

I hope the dead of winter finds everyone well.

I am planning some spring-time maintenance and first on the list is the timing belt and water pump.

My question is (as the title implies), what are the most important "others" to replace while getting the timing belt replaced? Last time I had the timing belt done (on a different 3rd gen) I bought on of AirCabinMan's kits on EBay. There are quite a few variations out there, both his and others', that use OEM (which is what I plan to do) but I'm trying to decide how much and/or how little I should have replaced. It seems like one could go down the rabbit hole pretty quickly.

For those more in the know than myself, if you were considering this a triage scenario, what would be your order? After timing belt and water pump...idler, pulley, seals, thermostat...?

FYI: I'll be having my trusty mechanic do this.

I'm assuming:

1. Timing Belt
2. Water pump
3. ...

I've only ever bought 1 crank bolt, but haven't used it yet. Just bought it to see what all the fuss was about.
I've never seen a kit include one, including those kits sold by Aircabinman and advertised as being "complete".

For me its:
#1:Belt and water pump, then tensioner, tensioner pulley, and idlers.
#2:Replace any seals that leak, or all of them.
#3:Thermostat, alt, ac, ps belts.
#4: crank bolt.

#1 and #2 items are underneath each other and require removal of the Timing belt to replace. But I've run the crank and cam seals out past 200k with no issues.
#3 and #4 items can be replaced at any time with little trouble.
 
I too am compiling parts for a TB change. I went for a different Aircabinman kit:

To that, I've added:

OEM Crankshaft Bolt - 90119-16006
OEM A/C Idler Pulley - 88440-35060 - Has integral bearing.
Aisin FBT-004 Fan Pulley Bracket. Bracket Assy. contains a captive, non-replaceable bearing:

As for the other spinning components - I'm holding off on the Fan Clutch, Alternator, PS Pump & A/C Compressor pending physical inspection.

While I'm in there, I will also be doing the PS flush / Pump reservoir filter screen cleaning via Tim's DIY as I have a whine upon cold startup:

This is a good list. Personally, I added the water outlet (16331-62040) and water inlet (16321-62020), because why not! Those are totally optional and I did them because they were taken off to do the timing belt and I didn't want to spend the time to get them all cleaned up. Now I have spares!

Depending on the miles,,,there is lots you can do...I also did the a/c tensioner pulley and fan pulley bracket ( listed above) also called a false water pump..as it kind of looks like one. I also did my cam and crank seals and thermostat.
An option for is fan clutch which I already had anyway (already had from a previous miss diagnosed bearing noise) but that is easy to replace at a later time.

also as mentioned in other threads, not knowing age or miles...hoses.... radiator. Mine were relatively new at the time ( less than 20k)

If paying someone to do the work, all those parts have to come off anyway..so why not replace with new if you can afford the parts and should not be an additional charge for labor. Again..depends on the miles.

And use Asian Red antifreeze..or Toyota antifreeze with distilled water

What's the point of replacing the oil cooler O-ring but not replacing the water lines to and from the oil cooler?
This line of thinking could go on right up till a guy just goes and buys a new truck.

Get the timing belt kit from Rock Auto - OEM parts without the Toyota markup. You'll need to buy the thermostat, but otherwise it has all the mandatory components.

I think I'll come up with a list of a bunch of stuff, show my mechanic, and see what he has to say about labor. As I said at the beginning, it's certainly a rabbit hole!

Them kits are always annoying. Its hard to get a vendor that tells it straight. Air Cabin Man seems to be one of the good ones.

He offers a kit for $220 that uses a few non-OEM belts and seals.

For those $175 kits the pictures look wrong. The Toyota water pump has "Toyota" and "Aisin" cast into it. The Aisin ones have the "Toyota" ground off and only the "Aisin" still there. In those kits the picture of the water pump has neither "Toyota" or "Aisin" cast into it.

The Rock Auto Aisin kit ($171) only has the timing components and in the water pump pic you can see where "Toyota" and "Aisin" were ground off and an Aisin sticker placed on it. I've installed a few like that.

This is a picture of a Toyota water pump. When you look at the Aisin branded ones you can see where they ground "Toyota" off and often the grind "Aisin" off and then put on a silver Aisin sticker where they ground "Toyota" off. All them "genuine Toyota" kits on Ebay for $174 have pictures of some other water pump sitting on a Toyota box.

I'm not a loyal Toyota fanboy, so I wouldn't fault a guy for using different belts, tensioner, thermostat. But the water pump is driven by the timing belt and the high tension of the belt puts a fair bit of side load on the bearings of the water pump. And the design is such that the bearings don't have much in the way of leverage. You want Toyota or Aisin for the water pump. Otherwise you risk the bearings wearing and the seal goes out before you get to 90K.

If they are already Aisin, why would the name get ground off and then a sticker put on ? In the "olden" days that meant they were a manufacture reject and someone later put the sticker on

I'm guessing there is some branding/marketing agreements between Aisin and Toyota.

I've pulled a few water pumps out of Aisin blue boxes that had both "Toyota" and "Aisin" ground off and a silver Aisin sticker.

There’s a kit on eBay claims everything is Toyota OEM besides a pulley or two. It also say “beware of fake Chinese parts” or something like that. The goes goes for 280$ish. Just know that they do not send you the exact part numbers that are in the description. Water pump and idler tensioner pulley are not Toyota brand but are listed as Toyota and the power steering belt that they send is from a 2.7l Taco. The seller claims it’s the exact same belt but what they list in the description isn’t what you get.

In that adds pictures the pump has "Toyota" ground off, but still has the "Aisin" casting and no "Aisin" sticker. That's how they used to come....

Like I said, them kits are annoying. Big game of cat and mouse.
