I advise to talk to your mechanic and clarify the work for all parts. Typical timing belt jobs don't include the tensioner, and replacing it is annoying. The AC pump and bracket have to removed - 8 more not super easy access bolts. More labor. Cam and crank seals are also 'extras' and are easy, but again, more time on the typical job.

That kit is fine. The kit I got that is mislabeled will still work perfectly fine and all parts are legit. But, The problem is I paid the extra money for the Toyota branding and that’s not what I got. Oh and the belt, That i still dont know if it will work.

Both times I’ve done my timing belt I’ve never done anything with the AC compressor to replace the tensioner. A universal joint and tape like in Timmy’s vid made it a lot easier.

What special service tools are technically needed for this job? Assume for a moment I was going to do the timing belt, water pump, tensioner, pulleys, crank and cam shaft seals and wanted the special tools...what would I need?

I bought the Aircabinman kit and let Toyota install all the components for 640 labor and another 24 bucks for some coolant. It took two days but I’m glad I let them do it. They do this stuff day in and day out on 4runners especially here in Colorado. Glad I spent the extra coin on the kit and mainly for the reputation that comes from the buyer.

I have ordered and received this kit:

It was much cheaper than a Gates or Aisin kit/package from RockAuto.

I can confirm that the pump has Aisin cast in, but Toyota ground. It also has a sticker where TOYOTA would be.
Comes with OE Toyota (with label) tensionner and bearing, and Mitsubishi belt.

Everything in a blue Aisin box, really well packed and padded.

Next week-end my truck gets the whole thing, plus fresh coolant and T-Stat. The seals are in-stock at my local parts store so I will change them if they leak.

Hello, all.

I hope the dead of winter finds everyone well.

I am planning some spring-time maintenance and first on the list is the timing belt and water pump.

My question is (as the title implies), what are the most important "others" to replace while getting the timing belt replaced? Last time I had the timing belt done (on a different 3rd gen) I bought on of AirCabinMan's kits on EBay. There are quite a few variations out there, both his and others', that use OEM (which is what I plan to do) but I'm trying to decide how much and/or how little I should have replaced. It seems like one could go down the rabbit hole pretty quickly.

For those more in the know than myself, if you were considering this a triage scenario, what would be your order? After timing belt and water pump...idler, pulley, seals, thermostat...?

FYI: I'll be having my trusty mechanic do this.

I'm assuming:

1. Timing Belt
2. Water pump
3. ...

I did pulleys, hydraulic tensioner, cam shaft seals, crank shaft seal, crank shaft bolt as Toyota doesn’t recommend reusing the original as it’s torqued to 217 ft lbs. Thermostat (don’t forget the gasket, radiator if it’s original, and that should do it!
