Timing Belt/Water pump costs

I brought my 3rd gen home last week, and my sister-in-law liked it so much, she wants to find one as a second vehicle to her Civic. I spotted one, basically identical to mine, not far away. It has 130k on it and seems to very clean and cared for. However, it has not had any major work done in it such as the timing belt and water pump. The lady wants 9 grand for it. I'd only pay close to that if nothing needed to be done.

What's the average cost of the timing belt/water pump job cost, including labor, at a dealership, at an independent mechanic, or just the parts for a shadetree job?

I bought the timing belt kit off eBay then took it to my local mechanic (not a dealership). I think he charged me like $475...

I'm sure it's just a starting price but it's way off if this work stilll needs to be done. When I said it's almost identical to mine, I meant just that. It's the same year, it's a limited, it's a 4x4, same color, and is within 5k of the same mileage. Not sure what options it has (i.e. e-locker, convenience pkg, etc.)

What I'm trying to get here in this thread is an estimate of what it would cost to have it (TB and WP) at a dealer, at an independent, and/or what the parts cost by themselves for a shadetree job. Ballparks are fine at this point.

Dont know the break down yet, but my 98's in the shop and the estimate is 1100, but that includes the timing belt, water pump, O2 sensor, windshield wipers, oil change, the diagnostic fee, and labor.

I was trying to negotiate with a used car dealer on a 2002 so I called the local Toyota dealer (yesterday) to get a price and he quoted me $550. I thought that was a little low, considering this particular dealer. I figure $650 is more like it.

Take a $1000 of the purchase price because of the work that needs to be done.

If you do buy the car make sure that you use real TOYOTA parts for the timing belt and water pump. OEM by Toyota parts producers is probably fine. An example is Koyo radiator, they made the part for Toyota so it is basically the same part. Do not go with cheapo stuff from EBAY. If you can find an EBAY sale that has real Toyota parts then that is fine. You want to avoid, autoZone or similar parts.

My non-Toyota water pump only lasted 45K miles.

Aircabinman's Waterpump/Timing Belt Kit (with all the belts, seals, etc) is $288 on eBay. he uses the same stuff Toyota does. My guess would be about $500 in labor. Call it a grand so you're starting at $8K now and go from there.

when it comes to ebay kits make sure the parts really are the same as Toyota. This means you should know the part # + manufacturor (Koyo, Asin ect.) and confirm it actually the same.

Let's throw in the cost for both idlers as well as the tensioner. I see that all the parts are above list price. Nice.

I guess a new crank bolt is not recommended.

What about the cam and crank seals?

They are on a as need basis. If you want our price I can get it for you. Shop rate is $91 hour and 1/2 hour per seal with the water pump or timing belt.
