Timing Belt / Water Pump / Fluids Pricing With Labor

Just purchased an '01 Toyota 4Runner Limited with NO records... It runs excellent, but have no information on when things were (or if) done.

Looking to get Timing Belt, Water Pump, Other Belts, All the Fluids done ASAP and looking for ballpark pricing... I'm in Houston, TX if you can recommend any mechanics you trust...

I have 156K miles!

If it has an automatic transmission you might consider having your radiator replaced at this time also if it is the original one!
 
I was quoted $850 yesterday for the timing belt, water pump, pulleys/tensioners, fluids, and labor.

Going to order the parts and do it myself to save $500.

You should also get a new radiator and add a trans cooler.
 
I was quoted between 850-990 for timing belt and waterpump at the 4 places I called today, about 300 less for just timing belt, but that is pointless to me when the waterpump is the main issue there. And 1200-1500 to have the tensioners, idlers, and seals replaced as well. One dealer wouldn't even quote me to replace the idlers and tensioners because he said I didn't need them. He doesn't know my truck or me and has no right to tell me what I do and don't need. He may be right but I want them replaced for peace of mind.

I think I'm just going to order the kit from aircabinman and save the extra cash. I've been reading on it all day and it doesn't sound too bad. I'm going to replace my radiator at the same time for peace of mind. The only thing I haven't decided is if I'm going to do the cam and crank seals. You have to pull the pulleys off to get to those and that doesn't sound like it's too easy and you run a risk of messing up the timing when doing that.

I checked around a few months back with a local shop that specializes in Toyota. I specifically asked what they do when they replace a timing belt on a 1997 4Runner — and what brand parts they use.

Here was the written response:

Good Afternoon Woody:

First, I'd like to thank you for contacting us with your service needs.

It's my pleasure to inform you that factory parts for timing belt repairs are the only type of parts we use. It's an intricate part of the engine and we do not take chances with aftermarket parts.

The timing belt service includes the following:

- Replace the timing belt assembly
- Inspect water pump assembly
- Inspect idler bearing and tensioner bearing
- Inspect timing belt tensioner adjuster
- Inspect camshaft seals and crankshaft seal
- Inspect accessory drive belts

Replacing the timing belt, water pump, thermostat, coolant, and drive belts would run $631.65

If you can make that grill you can change the TB/H2o pump and much more. :thumb3:

Haha thanks man. I don't have a problem doing stuff like that isn't essential like the grille or installing my sliders, but get kinda nervous doing big important things like this. I've changed the valve cover gaskets, fluids, plugs, LBJs, and rear axle seals on the T4R as well as the TBU and transmission cooler, but just never done a timing belt or been that far into an engine. It doesn't sound too bad and I think I can do it. I'll just take my time and start early on a Saturday so I have 2 full days if needed. There's lots of tips and info out there as well for it.

I'll probably get to it in a month or two when the temps cool down here in Alabama and if it goes well I may give the timing belt and valve stem seals in my MK3 Supra a shot. I've got trust issues with shops and my vehicles, plus the money I save I can put towards mods!:biggrin2:

They are fairly straight forward. I've done my fair share of these over the years. If you need help, contact me I only live a couple hours away. I'm sure we can work something out. :beer:

Sounds good man. I always thought these were a lot more difficult than they actually seem to be.
